Yea, i actually do that exact same thing myself, and with rare exceptions, that's the only time women hear compliments from me. Otherwise, it goes right to their head and they just put me in the same group as every other guy out there who constantly tries to flatter their way into their pants. In fact, whenever a girl compliments me, i often jokingly accuse her of that :D Always gets a  followed by :haha:.

Well honestly guys i'm not exagerating at all that girl was just drop dead gorgeous...stunning...i almod died...:( I wish it wasn't a subway full of people...and I mean FULL of people...I always think I'll look like a moron in a situation like that...maybe if there weren't so many people around :nervous: I guess I'm just shy maybe...
My first approach in a crowded place was on a bus full of people. And the girl wasn't even near me, nor was she looking at me. I just walked over to her, introduced myself, and told her that i don't plan on getting off the bus without her number. Man, i'll never forget the look on her face. She was absolutely glowing. She must have figured that if a guy would risk getting shot down in front of 50 people just for a chance to get to know her, she must be really something. It was awesome, i walked away laughing, even though she said she had a boyfriend. Do it man, you never know if that's exactly what she's hoping you'd do!

Which is better:
- Ask for her number
- Give her your number
- Ask to exchange info

First, not debatable. I've been asking for emails instead of numbers lately though. It's so much easier to fire off an email and let her respond than to call her, especially if she doesn't have a cell.

That's about the only thing in here I can agree with, ugh...

The main point that this thread illustrates is that YOU ALL THINK TOO MUCH!! Man, your gut reaction when you see someone smiling at you SHOULD be (at least it generally is with me) to smile back at them and say hi. It does not even matter if this person is a guy, girl, hot, ugly, whatever. The best strategy to NOT look like a creepy freak is to not BE a creepy freak and just handle it like any other everyday occurrence! You say hi, and if you can think of any topical thing to comment on to start a conversation then do it, otherwise off with it. Don't make a such a friggin' big deal out of every pretty girl!

LOL

unfortunately what one person considers normal may be perceived as creepy by someone else.

personally i liked stgfoos idea of talking about the packness of the subway. takes the focus off of the chick, unlike a compliment (not that chicks don't love hearing them, but after all the drunk, and outspoken men we run into, even a well-meaning compliment can put us on our guard) talking about something lighthearted, and stress-free (aka the subway, a certain poster on the subway, whatever is a safe way to enter the convo)

this is why talking about the weather, however lame, is always an easy conversation. its safe for both parties, and u sure as hell don't wanna scare her away first sentence
