Lol... Tiesto's my favourite DJ and even I can admit he's technically crap :p
Some transitions I've heard by him are shocking... he can beatmatch fine, but can't work the EQs and volumes for half the time. I've only recently started downloading livesets by him.. can't say I noticed it before when seeing him play (can't speak for others but I'm not really one for picking out technical errors while mashed in a club). |

Noble attitude and pretty intelligent post overall, but you seem to have missed the point. While the music is as important as the technique when playng out (if not more so) this is a thread about the best technical DJs specifically, not the best DJs overall. None of the DJs you've listed there (with the possible exception of PVD and Deep Dish, purely because they're pretty good mixers) excel in this area at all.
To all the people mentioning James Holden and Nick Warren, what are you talking about? They both play good tunes and are well worth seeing, but both have been notioriously average mixers in the past (though Holden has admnittedly improved significantly recently). Same goes for all the people mentioning only the big trance DJs when turntablism has never, ever been a part of being a trance sets. Tell me what Ferry Corsten, AvB, PvD, Tiesto or anyone else does that makes you think that they're technically gifted? I'm not suggesting that they're necessarily bad DJs, but it's just a fact of life that trance music doesn't lend itself to flamboyant turntablism.
When I think of technically gifted DJs, I'm thinking of guys like James Zabiela. While it's not always easy to understand why just from listening to his live sets, when you see him going nuts in the flesh it really something to behold. Check out his simultaneous use of the CDJs and turntables, his scratching ability, his mixing ability and his ability to incorporate on-the-fly FX to his sound and then tell me that 95% of the other people mentioned in this thread come anywhere near him. The only people I've seen live that come close are Jeff Mills, Sasha, Space DJz and Anthony Pappa, but Zabiela was still miles ahead.
Aside from that, you've also got the turntablists / scratchers (like Q-bert who was mentioned before) who would beat anyone else mentioned (including Zabiela probably) in terms of pure technique, but I've never had the pleasure of seeing any of them live so I'm not going to comment on them.

| for trance it would have to be PvD and Ferry. i saw armin couple nights ago in nyc, and he spun a solid set, but his mixing was just very boring. let the tracks drag out too long and only mixed beginnings and ends. pvd and ferry can really keep the energy goin. |

But the shocking point was he used to be able to work it all and not trainwreck. I saw him in 2001, no mistakes but now he does it often and that's sad, I don't hate tiesto but I know damn well he can do better. |

Well sure, but considering that this thread is based solely on technical merit, not track selection, we can ignore that 65/35 ratio and just go 100/0 technical/everything else, respectively. |

| well, imo you would have to go towards the techno genre for the most technical skill...Dave Clarke, Jeff Mills...ect...as for trance OO Flemming, and Van Dyk are pretty flawless... |
