Jonathan Woodgate is on the verge of joining Real Madrid, according to the newspaper that first revealed the club's interest in Michael Owen.
Marca claims a deal has been reached for the 24-year-old Newcastle defender, who will join Owen and David Beckham at the Bernabeu for a fee of about £15m.
Madrid coach Juan Antonio Camacho is desperate to boost his defence.
But Woodgate is still expected to be out for two to three weeks as he recovers from a serious thigh injury.
And the major stumbling block to Woodgate's transfer could be the medical.
The transfer window closes on 31 August and the defender would have to prove his fitness if the move was to happen.
Woodgate has not played since rupturing a thigh muscle in April and recently visited a German specialist in a bid to discover why it has taken so long for the injury to clear.
The defender has managed just 28 league games for the Magpies since his £9m move from Leeds in January 2003 and played 18 times in the Premiership last season.
Marca further reports that Camacho himself recommended signing Woodgate to the Real board, while the club were also said to be interested in Inter Milan's Fabio Cannavaro.
Real have already bolstered their defence this summer with the signing of Argentine defender Walter Samuel from Roma.
Jose Angel Sanchez - who negotiated David Beckham and Owen's transfers to Real - is reported to have recently visited Tyneside to try and thrash out the terms of a deal.
Woodgate has three years left on his current deal. |

| FabioCannavaro |
Yesterday Fabio Cannavaro was linked with a move to Real Madrid and the papers said it was almost done within the next 2 days. Today its Woodgate and now I just heard on the Radio that Real have enquired on how much Milan value Nesta. |

From what I've heard, Cannavaro is kinda injured (I just can't explain it in english), and Woodgate or Nesta are only 2 more names on the list. I was almost sure that Real Madrid was going to buy Coloccini, but then I heard that he is the last option. So if they can't get Woodgate another name will show up. |

He was injured but now back in training today. Coloccini would make the most sense. He is young and has the talent to be as good as a Cannavaro or Nesta. Milan I think will not sell Nesta especially this season, Cannavaro is always linked with some club but think he will stay another year. Woodgate? not sure hopefully he will not go. If he does it should be for a lot of money. |

I've read that Real Madrid will pay 15M euro for Woodgate and no more. I too like Coloccini more than Woodgate, but I think Coloccini is not european (maybe he has the italian citizenship tho) and this is the reason why Madrid is searching another defender. |

They can piss off for 15M Euros.
Woodgate may be injury prone but he is worth more than twice that if he gets over his injuries. |

Newcastle wants to sell him for 20M... |

If he doesn't get over his injury problems, he isn't worth 15M euros. If he does, he is worth twice that.
Newcastle said in January when Arsenal and Man Utd were interested that we wouldn't sell for any less than 50M, but since then he has been injured for 4 months. The last time he played was when we beat Chelsea in April. |

Woodgate isn't worth any more than 20mil euro's in my opinion.
He's to much of an injury risk. |

Everything, he's always getting injured.
He tore his thigh muscle 4 months ago, it should have healed by now but it hasn't and the club are concerned about it. He has been at Newcastle for 18 months and has only played 28 games. He was injured when we bought him, but it was the last day of the January transfer window so we rushed him through a medical.
He is an amazing defender, potentially one of the best in the world IMO, IF he can get over his injuries. But at the moment that's looking like a big IF.
I could live with him leaving if we can buy a good, less injury prone, experienced centre back in the next 11 days. But that's not enough time to replace the best player we have. Many Newcastle fans wouldn't be happy with 20M euros for him, despite his injury record. That is how highly he is rated here, but I would probably take 20M euros if we could find a replacement before the end of August. |
