if any of you play sports, phelps saying he is going to take 8 golds isnt arrogance, its confidence and you need it to win, besides, what is wrong with expressing your goal to everyone. if i was in the olympics, my goal would be to win a gold in every event i am in. hate the guy because he wants to win, good thinking.

I'm not trying to downplay what Phelps did, which is nothing short of amazing but 7 gold, 7 world records for Spritz is beyond the scope. I doubt Phelps will equal that record, swimming is just too competitive.

tho the talk of the games is the trash talker extraordinare Maurice Greene losing the 100m event.

If your gonna spin about him all the time get his name right for once its `spitz` not `spritz` hes not a ing fizzy drink!

also phelps kills him:

200m Butterfly: Spitz= 2:00.7, Phelps= 1:53.93. Gold to Phelps
200m Freestlye: Spitz= 1:52.78, Phelps= 1:45.99. Gold to Phelps
100m Butterfly: Spitz= 54.27, Phelps= 51.10. Gold to Phelps
100m Freestyle: Spitz= 51.22, Phelps= 49.05. Gold to Phelps
4x100m Freestyle Relay: Spitz and co= 3:26.42, Phelps and Co= 3:14.62
Gold to Phelps and co
4x200m Freestyle relay: Spitz and co= 7:35.78, Phelps and co= 7:07.33
Gold to Phelps and co
4x100m Medley relay: Spitz and co= 3:48.16, Phelps and co= 3:35.10
Gold to Phelps and co

Phelps wins 7/7 times... but doesnt matter 7 silvers is still impressive... not as impressive as 7 golds but

i dont think too many people here really ever played sports, atleast not religiously, but only because mom and pop wanted to keep them busy, which is usually how it goes

phelps is in no way an arrogant player. If thats arrogant than you guys will find yourselves throwing up on the b-ball courts.

You were making (a rather ineffectual) sarcastic comment about our medal count, so I simply pointed out that your country (i.e. - you have an Egyptian flag in your profile) hasn't one a single medal. In other words, before getting stuck into us, look in your own backyard.

i am sure if an egyptian got the same training oppertunites and accomedations as an aussie we would be kicking butt....

Possibly, although culture comes into it a lot as well. We're a sports mad country, so that certainly helps with funding and so forth.

i would say more and insult you or make witty comment about you and australia but i wont stoop to your level.

Err, what? I didn't insult you -- I simply responded to your post, as outlined above.

LOL I can't believe what I'm reading in this thread. So it it takes millions and billions to train olympic athletes and performance is derived from the amount of money you spend on an athelete? Alright experts, please derive the cost structure of training an olympic athlete and detail the ratio of performance one can gain due to the benefits wealth provides alone. Furthermore, only the US can afford to train athletes while the rest of the world stagnates (dare I look into the Australian swimming budget)? Ignore outliers such as the fact that many olympians are college athletes and thus cannot accept monetary contributions from professional organizations due to NCAA rules, instances whereby most athletes don't make any money at all unless they have name recognition to be feautured in commercials, instances whereby many athletes are so poor that they cannot even make it to the olympics without the support of celebrities like Pamela Anderson (who gave 25 grand to Mohini Bhardwaj, captain of the women's gymnastics team to go to athens), the fact that many NCAA athletes are privy to the same US training regime while representing their own national countries, etc., etc., etc.

Using population figures is a slightly better explanation for medal results, although it's still somewhat flawed. However, saying that whoever has the most money is going to have the best athletes is perhaps the silliest understanding of competitive sports I've seen yet. I guess we're winning the next world cup :haha:

Agreed, although I still think that culture is another major factor -- if a country is obsessed with sport and idolizes it’s stars, then in my mind they're more likely to do well and field more athletes than a nation that doesn't.

I would agree with that. I doubt the US softball team is making a dime (with the exception of that super hot pitcher ... so hot) but the fact that we're undefeated is going to spur more women to acheive greater things in the future for softball. Similarly I think Australia is going to do well from taking a few key swimming events from the US.
