From the Toronto Star
So hip it hurts? Have fun for a change
How to be gloriously uncool while having a fabulous time
From croquet to Canadian Idol, our tips for living large
There's nothing quite like being made to feel worse than dirt when you're spending $400 on a meal in a Toronto restaurant.
A recent visit to a downtown restaurant, which shall remain unnamed, managed to reduce three pretty gosh-darned sophisticated people first to severe uncomfortableness, then to giggles over the idiocy of it all.
Never mind that the temperature in the stark room must have been hovering around 15 Celsius; the iciness of the waiter was enough to make you reach for an electric blanket. We were told how to order and from which sections of the menu and that we had to share all the dishes, and furthermore, that the chef would decide in which order the meal would be served. When we declined the offer to "discuss" wine choices, the temperature plummeted to around freezing and the waiter's mouth turned down more than we thought was humanly possible.
The food was delicious, but didn't make up for the feeling of being looked down upon by someone whose job it is to bring us food. An urge to jump on the table, crack open an Ex, chew some tobacco, get a cheap boob job and start doing the Macarena became almost irresistible.
The long and the short of it is that at a certain point you just want to have fun, and not have to give a care about how you look or feel while having it. That leaves out snooty dining experiences, any club you have to line up for and bars that charge more than $10 for a martini in a plastic glass. (You know who you are.)
Going to the track, sitting in the sun, drinking domestic beer and betting on the ponies may be pretty hokey, but at least we won't be silently judged while — gasp! — enjoying ourselves |

the alternatives they suggest arent exactly my style. Id like to see the clubs mentioned without the prissy attitude that this article complains about.
But i postulate that many people are thinking like this lately which is why the club scene seems to be losing mass exodusses of clientele. Not to mention that most of the music in clubs these days is garbage as well. |

After having a VERY refreshing vacation in Europe this summer, all I can say that this city definitely needs to lose the attitude... clubs that make you wait in line for 2 hrs and then charge you $40 to get in, a bottle of water that costs $5, etc, etc. What a hell do you people think this is, Ibiza?
I know where I WON'T be spending my money... |

i've never waited that long in TO to get into a club. the longest i've ever waited was 45 mins for the first labour of love (which was one of the most chaotic club events in TO's recent past) |

You guys talking about Europe as if you've been to every club and every city...I've heard enough stories from Europe about clubs being much worse than here. You seriously want to tell me that we in Canada are more as you call it - "pretentious" than Europe???
I've heard enough stories about Ibiza summers too... |
