| kiddie porn displays a vile, disgusting and illegal act. Posting holocaust denials is simply posting your beliefs. For society to tell someone that they cannot express their beliefs (however right or wrong they may be) is even more perverse than the bigotted message that this guy is trying to convey. |

holocaust denial is vile. holocaust denial is not a belief - the only way that one could possibly deny the holocaust is if they hate mainstream thought and/or jewish people enough to create bizzare, inane conspiracy stories and to discuss this "belief" in any public forum is to incite hate.
there are a lot of people who don't believe everything they read and who are happy enough not to want to hate other people - they can read about something like holocaust denial-ism and ignore it like they should. but there are enough disgruntled people looking for someone to blame that read that and start hating people.
a similar debate (about something so blatantly wrong) is over whether or not HIV causes AIDS. millions of people are dying in Africa right now because the South African government has been denying that HIV causes AIDS so they provide these completely false bits of propaganda that misinform an entire continent of people. people are dying due to the propagation of this "belief". |

my friend and i debated whether or not drawing indecent pictures of children should be considered a crime.
he said that in a free and just society, a crime cannot be committed with a pen and paper.
i said, in a free society children should not be subjected to the sexual desires of pathologically perverse adults. pictures of children exploited sexually (hand drawn or not) are used by pedophiles to manipulate children into thinking that it's "ok" to have sex with adults. to keep my society free and protect children i am more than willing to give up my right to draw children in inappropriate sexual situations.

Yes - Interesting debate. However, you cannot exploit a picture. A piece of paper simply doesn't have the properties of exploitation. The pictures themselves necessitate no crime, much the same as a kitchen knife doesn't necessitate a stabbing incident. If these pictures are used to groom children, then a crime is committed. However, simply drawing a virtual depiction should not, in my opinion be illegal.
While I would never draw such a picture, I am principally against making it illegal to do so. It is my opinion that there must be a victim for a crime to be made. |

It's a little different when it's the views of one man who is a private citizen and the official line of the government. Governments have authority and are looked upon as such. If an authority is misleading it's society than it is a completely different situation. Stop comparing apples to oranges. |

One needs a permit, because without permits, people would intrude on their neighbours reasonable enjoyment. A sign can definitely intrude on a neighbour. As for table and chairs outside, on a residential lot you don't need a permit for that, but it could still intrude on a neighbour's reasonable enjoyment due to excessive noise outside, etc. |

i'm not suggesting that. i don't believe in "thought crime". i also think that oppositions are completely necessary for a healthy society. i'm just referring to people i know who won't believe anything in mainstream media (such as newspapers, the BBC, and CBC) beacause they think that it is complete propaganda. so, instead they belive anything they read on the internet posted by anyone that opposes mainstream media and they think they're getting the real deal. (not that there aren't valid internet or independent news resources)
there was a guy at my school "informing" me of how he read on the internet that "the jews were taking over Poland and they won't let any gentiles open businesses there because they're so greedy." maybe he was racist before, and reading that just reinforces it. |

| well ok. I agree that its not a nice thing to put on the internet but making it illegal is wrong. Because then you do have thought control. Instead of making it illegal, voice your opinion to the contrary and make sure that people have the access they need to the truth. Banning certain ways of thinking however awful they may be just lowers yourself to their level. |
