so if you go to the gym regularly and take care of yourself, you’re automatically a superficial tool who looks like every other person that has a nice body?

It's about intention, methinks.

I will condition my body because I want it to be effecient. I want to be able to effectively take a punch in the abs without keeling over in pain, I want to be able to help my Grandma put her heavy Hurricane shutters up. lol

I would take care of myself to have a body that works well. The superficial tools are those who work on their bodies for hours and hours each week just to impress the opposite sex. I suppose I can understand when you have naturally good looks and work on your body because you're a professional model or something like that, but I don't find it sexy when people get a really nice body and then flaunt it just because it's the result of hard work or just good genes. What can I say? I just don't find that as attractive as when somebody takes care of themselves merely to be healthy, and good looks are just a side-effect ;)

Maybe this is all based off of ideals, though...

But in the end, won't love be found in the subjectively ideal person?

Sorry to interrupt your meat-market thread :thepirate

there is nothing wrong with wanting to be attractive to the opposite sex. in fact, if you don't care about that you're an idiot. there is a difference between trying to look good and then just being a total vain, stuck up peice of . i don't think there is anything wrong with trying to be the person that you wanna be as long as it doesn't change the person that you are.

well you also have to realise that these guys are models, they need to market themselves to get hired. They have to look like that to get jobs.

kinda like if a dj caters his music to a certain club so he/she can get a spot there.

To be honest most of those guys aren't in very good shape. They just look scrawny to me, liked you would have to be careful around them or you might accidentally break them in half.

But it's hard to really judge someone's level of fitness by their appearance. A lot of professional bodybuilders look very strong, but for the amount of time they put into training most of them are actually exceptionally weak because they focus on exercise techniques to increase size and definition rather than muscular strength or endurance.

On the other half of the spectrum, you can just look like a pretty average guy and be in exceptional muscular and cardiovascular shape. Take the PRIDE fighting championships' heavyweight champion for example:

I can guarantee that Fedor spends more time in the gym than any male model you could find, and he likely has superior muscular strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness than 99%+ of them. The difference lies in the fact that they starve themselves so that the pitiful muscles they've managed to scrape together stick out from their skin. From a fitness standpoint, that's not being in shape, that's being underweight - which is exactly what most of them are.

I don't mind if that's the look that women are attracted to. These poor guys might as well have something going for them. But personally I would encourage people to pursue a diet and exercise program which produces actual physical fitness.

I used to lift 3-4 times a week and it felt good. I haven't been lifting in a while, but I play ice hockey twice a week and it's been keeping me in shape. However, I feel like I need to get back in the gym again. It's not a vain, superficial thing, as I'm mostly satisfied with my physique, but I feel better when I am stronger and working out. It's always nice to be confident, in regards to the opposite sex, but that's not the drive behind it.

i'd rather be lean and aesthetically pleasing and not be as strong, then be a fatass who could kick everyone's ass...just a personal opinion hehehe
