yea i dont think he will overclock so i may just go with the .90 3500+ with the a8v. my friend has that hooked up to a vapochill and its nice lol.. i saw this wireless lcd thing that came with the mobo that reads out speeds and stuff... and the software that works with the mobo is very nice also. makes me think about my quirky msi purchase but i like it becuase of hte ram design being parallel with airflow. im sure new bios updates will iron things out sooner or later, no complaints here for now i guess, highest i got that was benchmarkable was 2750mhz which is fairly respectable for a noob like me : P

cheers

hahah

is that good?

No, that is not enough ram to run applications such as Photoshop and Reason sufficiently.

An ideal size of RAM for photoediting & multimedia would be 1 GB (1024 MB of RAM), or 512 MB minimum to get good performance. Such an upgrade could be complicated if that tiny case only has like 2 RAM slots. If you aren't computer smart (and last time I remember, you aren't) to open your case and find out, get someone who is & see how many extra RAM slots you have.

If you only have 1 free slot, then i'd reccomend buying an extra stick of 512 MB ram from Best Buy or some place like that. This will give you 768 MB of RAM, enough to do a lot of multimedia work. Great value that way.

If there are only 2 slots, but both are taken by RAM, then i'd say just buy 2 x 512 MB (1024 MB), and swap the two chips out of that machine.

Oh and congrats on getting a free damn computer.

$200+ for graphics card now isn't worth it
as dual channel memory will be coming out for graphic cards next year
and will range in the same price range.

dual channel 256mb cards will range in the $200-$300 range while the 9800proxt 256 is about $260. Trust me it isn't worth it as the 9800proxt will be about $125 by the time next year's launch of dual channel memory vid cardz hit the market.

my AIW9600Pro 128mb cost me $169-Retail via newegg special.

MicroCenter.com advertising Radeon9800Pro $239AR which is cheaper than newegg's advertised price.

I've done my homework =) Thats why I'm running Prescott over Northwood. =)

and spending money of something that i can use multiple times versus spending money for 1 night of fun. Go figure?

lights for me atleast are just a way to see whats inside. what should i do... incandescent lightbulb? flashlight? : P like i said before i put lights in mine just so i can others can see inside if they want to. i dont even have a window

damn Kid n... you already have a very nice computer why build a new one? that would be a waste of money for me... going from a 3ghz prescott to an amd-64 seems like it would be spending alot of money for not a very significant boost in perforamnce. but hey if i could afford it i probably would too hehe

yea i dont spend money partying... food and records.. [and my comptuer instead of records in the last few months] i dont have to spend money to have fun 'partying'

fair enuff, its just here in the UK, a 9800 pro goes for about £120, whereas a 9600XT goes for £95, but the difference in price is far worth in the increase of performance

hehe but do you have the power on when you are working inside the computer? :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: dangerous lols...
as for building the AMD. Well the way I see it and my multifunctional computer usage I have 2 main tasks at hand.
1-Recreation surfing web etc and 2-Design, Databasing, and Multimedia

Both sides have different usages and different needs. I don't want to be running Ad aware on my p4 finding out i have 32984732 spyware program running since i was visiting the pron sites or surfing the intarweb. Most of my important files, applications, music, digital editing, and gaming is on the p4. Intel is notorious for multitasking versus AMD which is notorious for efficiency. You can tell the difference from switching program to program on an Intel versus AMD. AMD would run much more stable and longer with CPU efficiency while Intel would run more applications at half the efficiency. You make up the efficiency of the CPU with a high FSB and some low latency ram. Allows you to move through your programs quick and painless while having memory intensive applications open.

My AMD on the other hand will run for example Photoshop to its full extent without any other program opened. I find that both processors are great in its own entity. As both has their ups and downs. And to be completely honest, when my p4 (next yr) becomes the AVG machine, the AMD will be designated to living room e-machine and the next project will be a G5. Yea I'm goin apple...p4 will be designated multi-use web surf and gaming. Mac will get the audio video responsibilities.

Now you ask - What the hell do you do to be using computers soo intensively? Ok well I currently work for McGraw-Hill Companies as an Online Accounts Coordinator. Basically I monitor all of our large online accounts. (Business Aspect) Next, I manage a marketing campaign to support our Sales Force. (E-mail OPT-In/OPT-Out) and by the turn of 2005, I will be doing DB Management ontop after our Oracle shift. So you can see how I need the design for the marketing aspect, I need the Database capability to run our Data Inventory Queries and I need the Audio for my own pure enjoyment. Multi-use in full effect as I work way too hard to make that necessary living in New York City.

lol not for working but for seeing
and no i wasnt wondering what you do but... nice job : P

another point that i wanted to make but didnt have time to in the last post is the fact that computers are a part of who i am. i may not be paid to use my computer for something vastly important to human kind but for me it is a statement of who i am

i took on the project and i also had two goals: one was to have a fast computer. another more important goal was to have a great experience learning designing and fabricating something that was very thoughtful just like the equipment i have for spinning, the music i choose to play... all the way down to what i wear, everything i say, and everything i do.

modding a computer for those who are interested in computers is a statement just like everything else. its a statement of what they are into and what they want to do with it. its just like building models for some, or putting together a nice outfit or making something with photoshop, tuning a car or whatever.

computers happen to be something that i am into.

g5s look nice but i will never go apple lol i dont agree with their philosophy lately [ipods] and i hate mac supremecists

ps... give the amd to me when youre done with it next year lol
