i dont know... Where i work we have these 5 people who seem to be sick at least 2-5 days out of the month, every month... usually around a thursday to monday period... it absolutely drives me nuts, cause as the hard worker that i am, i wish i could be sick that often.. man the things i could do in a day...lol... now that i have a manager position tho things will change, cause i aint willing to take these peoples sh!t... i see it too often and if you dont have to work that often (cause we only have 3 sick days a year) then you dont really need your job.... If you really want to have days off that bad do like me and book the fricken time off... this way your pay dont get screwed, and people are cept happy...

and then you as a manager can acctually plan for their absence and get someobdy to take their shift.

We get 12 sick days a year, but you're not supposed to have more than 1 per month... and a doctors note is required if you take 2 days or more in a row.

I agree. However their purpose is no longer served.

i dont know about that. i think they do still provide benefit to the worker, but they have gained too much strength over the last 80 years. if some how you could have a union with limited influence, i think that would be more beneficial, cause that way it would still keep the employeer in check, while protecting the employee(their original purpose).

I don't know...

Mind you...I work my ass off...

my doc MUST luv me! she gives me notes for free - but supposedly, it is covered by OHIP - but i have been going to her since i was 14 years old!

CHICK DOCTORS RULE

and on a side note , if i am sick i will call in sick and get paid for it b/c i have union dues that I pay in order to get those days - so screw off whoever says it's b/c of laziness. I rarely call in sick when I am not well - most of the time I AM sick - so I will do what i do - and i do my best!

p.s.

I work in a retirement residence - so I am at risk or more prone to getting ill from these folk then at any other job.

word to big bird!

Ill agree its a pain in the ass... i was a mngr at McDicks for a while, and whenever an person called in sick, it was our job (the floor mngr) to fill that position, bc when the lunch or dinner rush hit u sure as hell didnt wanna be down a person.. the owner/operator rode our asses re: drive-thru times and assembly times....

and i hated taking bc i was down a person and there was nothing i could do..... plus convincing some ppl to come in and cover for a sick person was often hard.... just a pain in the ass really... i just hate asking ppl to come in when i already know whuty my answer is gonna be (ie. "no")

Having responsibility isnt all fun and games, thats for sure

I now work for a firm and we get 12 paid sickdays a year, cumulative... i have so many built up onver the years its not funny... i could prolly be sick for 2 months and still be paid the whole time! =))

We never really need a doctors note, the partners would never ask, if im sick 2 or 3 days in a row, then im sick those days, im never gonna be asked to produce a note (and if i was, and i was charged $50 to do so, i doubt id do it either)

Jayx it sounds like u actually like hate ur job...and only love it when ur foot soldiers do it for u...no wonder ur conservative...

well i think this problem has been taken too seriously...and do u really expect fully commited people to work for u when they only get 7.50 an hr?

I dunno about everyone else here but when i worked a job soley for the perpose of getting money...every shift i had, i would always f off for at least an hour...especially when i was working at Canadian Tire/Sears/Alice Fazooli's...in the end i was fired/laid off/quit.

With these type of low wage jobs...u tend to stray off into something more fulfilling...so i dunno what to say Jayx but this kinda happens with this type of work.

My boss once asked me for a summary of the jobs I completed on my midnight shifts. Since I'm in a unionised environment even though I'm part time and going to school AND we have to record our duties in the main log book anyway, I thought I'd have fun with it.

11:45 = took a
12:30 = took another
2:00 = smoked a joint, drank a beer.
4:00 = took a again.
6:00 = ate a big breakfast, had a quick nap.
7:30 = went home (took a first)

I sent it to him over the email system. Needless to say, he stopped hounding me for summaries of "tasks" completed after that. I think he got the point I was trying to make.
