Funny stuff. I'm not sure that I agree with Jay on this one, but I find it equally disheartening to see the attitude that so many people here have for their jobs. Canadians are SO ing short-sighted, it pisses me off.
I've seen at least three people in this thread talk about unions in a positive light simply because the unions benefit them personally - well good for you, but that doesn't mean they benefit society as a whole. They probably don't even benefit you personally in the long term because they're hurting the company and that means they're hurting your job security.
And if you don't like your job, get a better one or get more schooling, don't do it half-assed because it's "for someone else's profit" - it's for YOUR profit too, you're getting PAID to do that job, so ing WORK for that money you leeches! |

Seriously, Digi has a point. I make in 7.35 at Pizza Hut working 30 hours a week and I've never called in sick because I actually like getting what I want at my job. Because of my work ethic I can request any day off I wish and I work the exact hours that I request. Sure calling in sick a few times would have earned me a few Saturdays, but instead I worked Saturdays for 6 months and requested specific weeks I needed off. And now I have EVERY Saturday AND Sunday off.
No one sees the long-term benefit of sucking up to your employer and actually doing some work these days...
That being said... please... for a part-time, minimum wage job... with positions generaly filled with 15-17 year olds... you can't expect them to take the job seriously. They honestly don't care... if you fire them, there are 50 other fast food/retail stores they can EASILY get a job at making just as much money. It's different when you have a real job that actually takes some effort to get. |

the quote button never works for me...dont know why...
but this is in reply to DigiNut's reply...regarding
"And if you don't like your job, get a better one or get more schooling, don't do it half-assed because it's "for someone else's profit" - it's for YOUR profit too, you're getting PAID to do that job, so ing WORK for that money you leeches!"
1) i agree with you diginut that ur expected to work for ur money...but under some circumstances ur work tends to be a drag when
- no appreciation
- no position advancement
- no raise
which led to the 'for someone else's profit' saying...from my work experience where my several boss' did not acknowledge my helpful and efficient contributions...cant say im in a bad position now...since things are worked out...but i meant in regards to the low wage jobs.
2) I've been in a management position a few times and never regarded people who didnt like there jobs 'leeches'...people's performance are affected from different situations. Another view i had witness as being in management is that well...we do all...acouple of calls here and there to make sure resources are in check...keeping up sales quota...improving sales quota...etc...Having to fill in for someone...is well just part of the job.
Hopefully i clarified myself there...

I work in a union environment. I make awesome shift premiums on overnight shifts. I have a great benefits package. But I work in a four person department, and it sucks that I get paid the same as one lazy jackass in particular, who constantly screws up and costs the other workers time, and the station money!
He is protected by the union, and managment "speaks to him" on a regular basis, which falls on deaf ears.
I enjoy the job, but I am completely fed up with picking up the slack and doing this guy's work. When a commercial airs wrong for two weeks, too, that means I can't go and ask for a raise, because the station and our department has lost money.
I am always looking for a new job or opportunity, but it's hard to find anything at the salary I'm at (don't get me wrong, I'd take a pay cut for a great job). There's not much of anything out there at the moment.
Very frusterating! I've basically had to change my work ethic from "do the job and do it well", to "oh, well, why should I care if no one else does".
Sucks crap. |

I can't believe some people would want to get rid of unions. Sure, they're not as vital these days, but you're better off with one than without one. Who do you think pushed for all the worker's rights that both union and non-union people now enjoy?
I work in a unionised environment and there is still so much going both ways, it's just unbelievable. Sure, you've got lazy s who sit around and do nothing. But you've also got sneaky, back stabbing managers who deliberately people around trying to find loopholes in seniority requirements and CBA's. I know several City of London staff who are victims of this type of crap. |

well i think this problem has been taken too seriously...and do u really expect fully commited people to work for u when they only get 7.50 an hr?
I dunno about everyone else here but when i worked a job soley for the perpose of getting money...every shift i had, i would always f off for at least an hour...especially when i was working at Canadian Tire/Sears/Alice Fazooli's...in the end i was fired/laid off/quit.
With these type of low wage jobs...u tend to stray off into something more fulfilling...so i dunno what to say Jayx but this kinda happens with this type of work.

Actually i work hard to set an example. Not only that but i have to work twice as hard when someone calls in sick. I expect people to take their designated breaks and relax. The rest of the time there is ALWAYS something that needs to be done. If someone is standing around goofing off and wasting my time they are essentially stealing my money. It's no better than taking $7.50 from the register in my opinion. I work hard and many of my other employees work hard so why should we tolerate goof offs that make it harder on everyone else? This is why the good ones get raises and benefits and goof offs get the can. I will say that the truely hard workers usually get first pick at which days off they want because they EARNED it.
Btw for really really exceptional work we give away free movie certificates and roots gift certificates. For example when our store got one of the highest marks for inspection we rewarded those who went out of their way to make sure the place was spotless with these rewards. We are not slave drivers but we do expect honest work for honest pay. |

I'm going to be a wrestler, too... (although I'm terribly out of shape). My persona is "the librarian". I push a rack of books down to the ring while "hushing" the crowd (librarians don't like noise). My finishing move is called the "due date" where I whap you my chalk-filled encyclopedia (like it's all dusty). My character also improves literacy throughout the world. And I have a torrid affair with Spike Dudley. :D |
