hmm... how about:
20% creativity (originality)
20% structure (build up)
20% sound quality (i find this one very important)
20% all other extra supporting synths/basslines/percussion/etc.
20% overall..??
i'm not sure yet if i will enter yet.. i've listened to all 3 samples and they're not really my style. i will have to think about it. |

I think your work trancenation is good enough to be one of the judges, if you want
if we were to judge sound Quality we would have to know what they used to produce the track.
maybe we could get them to just give there tracks names with eg
( day dream-Fruity mix) on the end or what ever they used |

| i agree with what you said earlier about not knowing who made what so it's fair. however i don't think it's neccesary to know what software they used. |

true, people decide what they think is the best and if they think its Fruity or reason so be it |

| if for example i was to make a track on fruityloops and then make that same track on hardware i think we all know which one would score all the sound quality points, so in that case it's not really fair, maybe we shouldn't judge 'sound quality' and judge say 'sound mastering' for instance if a hi hat is too loud or the kick is too soft, what do you guys think? |

| i agree to some extent, but some productions have a such a low sound/production quality. i really think this matters in terms of how proffesional it sounds. |

| even with software you can seriously work on sound quality. Just remember there have been releases made with software only. |

| trancenation |
| exactly. i find this a very important point, if not the most important one. |

| yeah but um no matter how good u are you just CANNOT get a sound out of fruity that matches hardware. |
|
|
| trancenation |
| yeah.. but surely you can get a *reasonable* sound quality with it... |

Yes you can!
I don't know if you ever handled hardware, but if you don't master your mix well, you end up with unsparkly sound with probably a lot of noise.
So you have to go thru some trouble to get your mix soubding tip-top. Compress the mix, put it thru an exciter or finalizer, or just do some EQ-ing on the mix, noise reduction etc.
If you can put a mix made with hardware thru all that , you can do the same with a mix made with software.
Yes I find hardware better than software. I love the buttons and I love the feel and it often has fatter sounds too. But don't expect the hardware to do the mixing and producing for you! It's not like some miraculous change from a life-less mix to a vivid, sparkling sound. That takes effort.
You can't say "It's not fair your mix sounds better, you use hardware". The difference is more in the way of working (which is more real-time) and the sound of some leads and basses when you hear them separate. Most 303 freaks can't hear the difference between a rebirth 303 and a real 303 when it sits processed, in a mix! |

I know! i tweak the out of my tracks i make with fruity but no matter what i try it's just impossible to get any sort of phat sound out of it!, the difference is clear, stuff produced with fruity's synths sounds weak and tinny, hardware sounds thick and full!
:D, you have to agree with me :)
and yes, its true to a great extent that its the man behind the buttons, but if the man behind the buttons uses gear which cannot create thick juicy sounds then where does that leave him?! |
