3. Saying djs that dont produce arnt musicians is the dumbest thing i've ever heard you for sure have never touched a turntable.

What makes them musicians then? I sure don't think being able to beatmatch makes you a musician. |

so a drummer isnt a musician?
if you think being a dj is only about beat matching then man your understanding of dj's is really limited...
Being able to combine songs and having harmonics line up is a HUGE and essential part as well, any joe after months of listening can have two drums hitting at the same time... its the people that can take it to the next level and harmonically combine the music.
If you consider musicians as people who compose music then what do you call all those kids in an orchestra? they dont compose the music they just play the notes on the page..
so by definition you're saying that you cant be a musician unless you produce. |

I do agree that producers deserve mad respect, but I think that skilled DJ's who do more than just mix two records back to back could be considered musicians (someone like Zabiela or Hawtin). People will pay good money to see a skilled pianist or jazz trumpet player, but more often than not they're playing other people's songs - but we still refer to them as musicians.
No, mixing records back to back is not on the same level as playing an instrument, but when you start doing really creative stuff, throwing in loops and scratching and cutting and all of that, then you're hitting that level. |

A DJ is not a musician because he/she doesn't play a musical instrument (a turntable is not an instrument, it is hardware that allows you to play music while bending the song's pitch)...A DJ is an entertainer.
Nevertheless, this doesn't mean that DJing is not an ART, because it has more art than playing in a ing cover band.
For the person who said he was ashamed to be a DJ, off and go live in the North Pole mate...you should only be ashamed to be a DJ if you actually suck at it...if you're good and can make people go through journeys and experience strange emotions, then you should be proud and brag to people about being proud to be a DJ. |

2. Do you play an instrument? if you do i hope you play ONLY music you write otherwise its like you playing someone else’s music and then being proud of it. (exact same as playing a record mate)

Alright..so I'm having a bad day today cos I didnt get the shroomz I ordered n now i'm sitting here bored to my ass.
1.I Dont think ppl think less of me for being a Dj. "Embarrasing" wasnt the right term, so I sorry for that. What I did mean was that I dont enjoy tellin ppl I spin cos they're all like "Whoaaa...u make beats n ...RESPECT". Why 95% of ppl seem to think this is what a Dj does is beyond me and when I tell them what an average Djs does do...they're just like "..oh..". Its cos of this I reckon the average Dj is overrated, especially those that seem to think they're God or something when they put on Usher n the crowd goes wild.
2. Yes I do play an instrument, and have for the past 6 years. Playing someone else's record on decks, and playing a song on guitar is not the same thing. One acually requirese skill beyond pressing "play". If u were, however, to do a live PA perfomance of a trance song..then I'd call u a musician..but thats not Djing.
3.Acually I have. Sorry but I still dont reckon mixing alone (which 90% of the Djs here, including me, do) makes him/her a musician. If he's able to do a live remix using extra decks, efx, etc, then yes. And there's no denying masters such as Qbert acually uses decks to create music...respect for that. Turntabalist to me are musicians. The average club Dj with nothign special to show is not. |

I tell people what I do as a dj and they all seem to have respect for it. I don't say, "I press play and then I slide this bar across." That's not what I do. I tell them everything from beatmatching, at the base level, to programming and keying and creating solid overlaps, fluidly. I am getting into production and have a lot of respect for good producers, but a lot of them can't spin for . Truly being a dj vs. playing records here and there makes a big difference. The atmosphere that you can create, or ruin, based on the tracks you select and the quality of your mixing is an art that should not be underrated.
I've played guitar for a bit too, and, although it is a little different, it is also the same, on a certain level. You have to understand the music and the equipment that you are using. Turntable isn't an instrument, by itself, but with another table and a mixer, I believe it is. Everyone has a different mixing style and different taste in tracks. It's very individual and unique. A lot of turntablists can pull trickery off great, but can't hold a beat-match for more than 20 seconds. To me, that can be irratating beyond the ability they bring to the tables. |

I would be far more comfortable saying Brian Transeau or Sasha are musicians than Ashlee Simpson or Simple Plan. There are some DJs who also include live elements into their sets, like BT, Mirco de Govia and Nu NRG. While most don't play live instruments, there is a difference between just playing classic song after classic song and arranging music to take shape over the course of a set while adding additional elements. A lot of it comes down to the fact that you can't produce a lot of electronic music live on the spot with multiple layers like you can pick up a guitar.
No one should be getting $40,000 a night for that, but it does take some talent and understanding of music. When you spend countless hours practicing for a gig, not just on beatmatching, but also trying to put certain songs in a particular order to make the set flow perfectly, you understand. Also turntablists should be clearly considered musicians. |

Of course BT and Sasha are musicians. Especially BT. He sings, he plays guitar, he can run pretty much any production hardware/software on the planet. Hell, he produced N'Sync's album. I don't think anyone would argue with you on that. I think any producer is a musician, some good some bad. It's the question of whether or not a dj is a musician that is more complex. |

Well you're ignorant, so that's understandable. Whether they could or not (and they can), they wouldn't want do to it anyway. That would be like Jeff Gordon trying to win the Indy 500 in a Pinto. Or like Wayne Gretzky playing against a bunch of High School kids. He wouldn't even think about doing it, it's so below his skills. |

Let's keep it simple:
- DJ's play music
- Musicians create music
I think it depends on creativity and originality whether a dj is a musician yes or no. Guys like Zabiela pretty much create their own songs while mixing, so are they musicians? Mixing one song after another doesn't really make you a musician imo. Once you start editing/re-creating the music to make it your own, you are definately one step closer to being a musician. |

Turntablists are musicians. BT, Sasha and Zabiela are musicians.
Tiesto is not. |
