I definitely agree with what Inertia has said.
While some of us may bash DJs because they are not technically "musicians", how would you classify people that the music industry calls "musicians" like Ashlee Simpson or Britney Spears? They don't play instruments. |

| i think a dj who produces his or her own music as well as spin other peoples is respectable. its all very well being a dj who doesnt make your own music, but for a dj who doesnt produce to become successful and make a shed load of money, i dont think thats very ethical really.. but fair enough they are doing us producers a favour by supporting our music, and at the end of the day a dj is almost as able to express him or herself just as well by spinning other peoples tracks as a producer is by making tracks! so fair play... :) |

| also... if you wanted to take this to extremes.. you could say that bands are cheating because they didnt make their own guitars or drum kits, they just hit them and strum them, someone else created the means of making that sound, not them... but that really is over the top!! |

I dont cosider a lot of mainstream people musicians.
and pretty much agree with Intertia.
but does it really matter all that much? if they are good they are good! not everyone can put together a good set and have it come across really well.
why can t we just enjoy what we enjoy !?!?!
I dont think I really have much more respect for dj/producers over just pure dj's then again most of the top dj's i like ..most produce. ahhaaa. |

| Actually, I don't really bother, because when you're in a club, on a beach, at a concert ... . Does it really matter wether the DJ is an artist? In my view i don't think so, when I hear a Tune that brings a smile on my face, that raises my hands into the sky and makes me wanna move and dance and so on... i'm not thinking about the fact that it wasn't originally created by the dj who is spinning the tunes at that moment. I'm just happy that he plays it... . To my mind, Becoming a DJ isn't as hard as becoming for instance the world's best saxophone player, just to give a stupid example. But if you wanna be and last you have to be driven, to be motivated, you have to have the will to be the best... So maybe they are not artists in the most common sense of the word, because the technical aspect is a bit easier, but i do admire their perseverance ( because otherwise they wouldn't have got there)... |

Maybe we should just leave it at this:
Musicians, DJs etc. all fall under the category of being entertainers. Their job is simply to entertain people, and whatever way they do it should not matter. They all hold performances, although under different guises (party, rave, concert, etc.) Whether it is by turntables, singing, playing instruments, etc. they are all the same in my eyes; their job is to provide enjoyment and entertainment. |

Damn...if DJs fall into the category of being entertainers, then that would put Sasha or PvD under the same category as Britney Spears and Ashley Simpson :nervous:

Djs sometimes make their own tracks, in which case I would call them musicians. However, if a person just mixes, then no, they aren't musicians. They're sort of the master or mistress of the party....like the lead it. That would be cool to do so |
