What you don't seem to understand in this thread is that the point I tried to make was unrelated to who is or is not a musician. |

I think this thread raises a very valid question: Are DJs musicians? Or are they just taking credit for otehr people's work.
I think the people who don't like it, are just too offended by it to try to back up what they're saying by answering the question with strong support. |

You have to admit...
Good Small-Time DJs:
1) Get the Bitches
2) Evoke EMotion
3) Set the Mood
4) Good money (though expensive to get started)
Small-time rock Bands:
1) Low Paid
2) Not as respected
3) Work hard to make up own songs
4) May have the capacity to envoke emotion
COnsidering that they often playt other people's music, is it really fair for Djs, who aren't producing their own music and playing it, to get all this respect and attention that they get, when they didn't even make the music the people in the dancefloor are appreciating?
CAN WE PLEASE STOP BASHING THE GUY WHO DOESn"T TELL PEOPLE HE'S A DJ?
SO WHAT?
GET THE OVER IT, YOU DO WHAT U WANT, HIS DECISIONS DON'T AFFECT YOU AT ALL DOES IT? DOES IT BOTHER YOU, OR ARE U LETTING IT BOTHER YOU? |

a DJ is not a musician. he does not make music. however, he is still an artist. DJing is not a science, there is no one way to do it, everyone has their own touch to it. it's an art.
a turntablist, however is a musician. he MAKES music, using vinyl and a turntable as an instrument. read: a deck is only an instrument when it's used this way, when it's used to create music.
a producer is a musician. he makes music, whether or not it's with a traditional instrument.
finally, a live remixer, (a la Richie Hawtin, or what Sasha is doing, making tracks on the fly, remixing tracks, throwing in samples, or even Zabiela) is a musician. why? well, they are doing on the fly, live, what a producer would do sitting in a chair in his studio. he creates music (or adds to it, sort of the way a turntablist adds to a track by scratching) making him a musician in my eyes. |

Probably the most accurate view so far. |

I got my hands on VIrtual DJ about a week ago...
I practice about 2 hours everyday since...
I have to say, people don't realise how incredible intriciate the art of DJing is... tehy think it's just pressing play, and making scratches and moving a freaking vinyl around...\
I have to say though, I can't really talk. If i want, I press one button and the computer does a perfect lining up the beat for me :D. BUt that allows me to focus on other aspects of DJing. WHen u don't have to spend time lining up beats, it's incredible how good of a DJ u can become. |

I sort of disagree with this argument.
DJ's who are mixing are in a sense linking music together which in a sense is creating music. Yes, the original track wasn't made by them but there's an art to it. |

| Stop trying to label everything, just kick back and enjoy the music. That's what its all about, if it sounds good who cares whether it came from an "artist" or "musician" or "wannabe loser"? |

that's what I've been told by many people here....
Compared to real bands... are Djs really prostitutes??? BEcause they don't make their own music, but just play others??? DOes that mean that they're not really proper musicians? Does it mean, that bands are real musicians, and that they deserve more respect?
wat do u say to someone who says something like that :( ???? |
i didnt read the whole thread, but i think this i the silliest thing ive ever heard.
DJ = disc jockey ... ie a person that selects records and spins them, from being a radio DJ [selecting new talent and giving it air time] or club DJ [discovering your own tunes that youd like to play to a room of a couple of thousand ppl to give them a good time].
i dont think a DJ has ever tried to come across as being the man behind the tracks he is spinning in a club. when you look at it, all the guy is doing is the same as what a DJ in a drunkhead club is doing, just playing records that he/she thinks that the crowd will enjoy which will define theyre night musically.
the whole beatmatching and seamless mixing and set-journey/progression is merely an artform that has evo0lved from just spinning tracks, and depending on how much you love your music entails on how much you think that say PVD rocks as a DJ. yeah certainly club DJing is a million miles aay from spinning tracks on a wireless, and theres so much more skill in it, thats why the like of any DJ you hear frequently on this site are paid lots of money for theyre trade... and in that sense theyre professionals of theyre trade.
if you wanna take your comment to another extent, footballers or prostitutes.. they dont wear theyre own clothes, use sumones elses invention [the football] and play a game that they had no taking part of creating..... sounds silly dosnt it! |
