DJs are prostitutes (pg. 6)

It seems a lot of people are arguing that you have to produce the music yourself to be considered a musician, so my question is would someone who plays an instrument and covers another person's song be considered a musician? Probably yes, they just wouldn't be considered a producer or artist, but they still play music.

Consequently in my personal opinion, I consider many DJs to be musicians, because they use other people's music and develop them into setting a mood or new sound (e.g. using personal samples, editing songs before playing them out, mixing songs together in a certain way, etc.) Someone who just plays out hit after hit at a club is not a musician, but there are a large number of DJs who do much more and should make being a DJ a serious consideration as a type of musician.

Okay, I see the other meaning now. But, I don't believe that my case lacks merit. If you don't have a complete perspective, your argument is weakened, and you don't. Therefore, it is an important detail in the current discussion.

Your case lacks any merit. Both because it's not based on the point I tried to make and because it doesn't address the argument, but rather me instead. My argument is strengthened by logic. Your argument is void twice over.

I agree with that, but it's still a gray area. I am a good dj, but does that really make me a musician? I've played guitar and am starting to produce, which I feel definitely makes me a musician, but djing isn't as clear cut. Some will feel that it does classify and others will not. I don't think there is one answer to the question.

You're right, there is a lot of gray area. I think a lot of DJs are musicians and a lot are not, but I am taking the more optomistic route in trying to say many are, because I don't think many people in general realize that so many DJs put a lot more effort than just simply spinning track after track. I remember watching a spoken word show with Henry Rollins where he was going off on how he'd play big festivals in Europe and he didn't get why people would go to see some of the DJs on the tour and their box of records. I'm not saying AT ALL that I'm that good yet, but I've been in several bands before playing guitar and drums and I just feel I use the same thought process and preparation in trying to put together a set that I did when I was playing music in bands. When you listen to a lot of sets, you can tell when a DJ is simply playing tracks or is trying to develop something out of them. For me personally, I find the latter to qualify.

I agree with you completely. But others will not.

Very true, as with most issues. Just stating my thoughts and rationale on the gray area. Music always amazes me in how what one person loves and finds brilliant, another person will absolutely hate. Many things are like that, but especially with music and political ideology.

I think the difference comes in perspective. It's what I've argued with Rad on many occasions. Someone that mixes and takes all of the details into account would consider quality dj's as musicians, for the most part. People who do not dj and understand the intricacies of quality mixing would not.
