Please take a moment today in remembrance of the thousands that have died and are suffering after the earthquake and resulting tidal waves that have left most of south-eastern Asian in turmoil. This happening the day after Christmas just makes it even harder to stomach. Thousands have died on the eastern seaboard of my home country Sri Lanka. Fortunately, my relatives live on the west coast and are fine but I feel really bad for all the families that have lost loved ones and left homeless. |

26 December 2004
The President has proclaimed a State of Emergency, following the National Disaster caused by the tsunami that swept the Maldives early this morning.
The tsunami has claimed the lives of a number of people, caused extensive structural damage, leaving parts of the nation deprived of electricity and means of communication.
Under the powers vested in the President by Article 42 (b) of the Constitution, the President declared the State of Emergency to facilitate disaster relief effects, assess the damage caused by the tsunami and carry out further mitigation measures.
The President appealed to the public in this time of national disaster, to provide any assistance in carrying out the directives of the Ministerial Committee and Taskforce formed to co-ordinate the necessary emergency steps.
The administrative centre for the Taskforce has been set up at Iskandhar School.

| My parents have had many students from Thailand live with them over the past 10 years (my parents rent my old room out to Brock ESL students). Many of them have become like a brother or sister to me and many of them live in Phuket. My mom is worried sick and awaiting news about their families safety. This is so very sad. And to happen on a day like Christmas with absolutely no warning. My thoughts go out to all of those affect by this horrible disaster. |
