Funny... cause I thought a real New York team beat the Sox in the '86 WS. And a real New York team beat them in the ALCS in '03. Guess I'm just crazy... :thepirate

Nobody gives a about the Mets. They will forever live under the shadow of the Yankees, no matter how many smartass remarks you make.

Were you alive in the 80's?

sure was...and I still know the Yankees got more attention, even though they were subpar a few years. Live with it...the Yankees are New York's team. I've actually got nothing against the Mets because I love the city to death, but they are the kid brother.

forgot who said this, it was on ESPN, they said that the Mets had a bigger fan base in the 80s and now its almost about the same as the yankees.
The Yankees got alot of attention in the 80s...but it was because of all the dumb things they did lol.

Certainly Shamez remembers considering he was 6 years old in 1988. (I was 12....)

What exactly classifies the 80's? Why is the 80's the reference point? What exactly measures the cities attention? What exactly measures varying success? Here's wins in the 80's:

Mets Yankees
1980 67-95 103-59
1981 41-62 59-48
1982 65-97 79-83
1983 68-94 91-71
1984 90-72 87-75
1985 98-64 97-64
1986 108-54 90-72
1987 92-70 89-73
1988 100-60 85-76
1989 87-75 74-87

Total 816-743 854-708

Certainly the Mets have the 1986 season with the championship. And overall after 1984 they had the better record (but some times not by much). Yet, the Yanks played in one in 1981 but lost to the Dodgers.

The Mets obviously garnered a lot of attention with Strawberry, Gooden, Cone, etc and the cocaine boys. I'd say the Yanks grabbed a lot of headlines too with Don Mattingly, Dave Winfield, and Rickey Henderson, etc.

Plus, there was no wild card back then. Under the current format, the Yankees would have finished in the wild card on several occasions.

Outside of New York where I lived, besides 1986, the Yankees always gathered more attention. Going to games in opposing stadiums always saw hordes of Yankee fans. Going to many Mets/Giants or Mets/Dodgers games in my youth, I don't remember too many Mets fans there.

It's really tough to say. The Mets certainly had a lot of attention a few years there. I'm not just kicking sand on them. I just don't think you're continued broad statements about history is absolutely correct. You always mention that the Yankees were nothing in the 80's. I sincerely have to disagree! They weren't a powerhouse but they weren't awful either.

gotta admire all that research

I know that, but saying 'mid to late 80's and early 90's' is annoying. So I generally just say 80's. But from ''84 - 90 the Mets were *the* team in New York. We were all over the place. If jersey's were worn back then, there would have been many more Straw and Gooden jerseys than Mattingley and Randolph jerseys being worn around New York.

Look, I'm not a moron. I know the Yankees are better than the Mets. I know the Sox, Cards, Braves, A's, blah blah are all better than the Mets. But it's when people say the Mets sucked always and the Yankees were great always that gets me upset. There was a time in history where it was way cooler to be a Mets fan in NY than it was to be a Yankees fan in NY. Correct?
