I know that, but saying 'mid to late 80's and early 90's' is annoying. So I generally just say 80's. But from ''84 - 90 the Mets were *the* team in New York. We were all over the place. If jersey's were worn back then, there would have been many more Straw and Gooden jerseys than Mattingley and Randolph jerseys being worn around New York.

Look, I'm not a moron. I know the Yankees are better than the Mets. I know the Sox, Cards, Braves, A's, blah blah are all better than the Mets. But it's when people say the Mets sucked always and the Yankees were great always that gets me upset. There was a time in history where it was way cooler to be a Mets fan in NY than it was to be a Yankees fan in NY. Correct? [/QUOTE

Yeah for sure.

Personally, I feel the same about the Mets as I do about the Cubs, Tigers, Reds, Rockies, etc. Apathetic.... neither love nor disdain.

Be careful with any Yankee fan when mentioning Mattingly.... ;)

I don't mind the Mets getting some buzz too with Pedro and Beltran. Just means the city really cares about baseball. I love the battling. Having the Mets as contenders makes it more fun to live here.

Billy Martin getting fired and hired and fired and hired and fired
Dave Winfield and Steinbrenner calling him "Mr. May"
Pine Tar incident at Yankee Stadium

I know I'm missing more...

Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps :D , one example of all the young talent the yanks let go of to get mediocore veterans

Steinbrenner getting suspended from baseball for paying money to Howard Shapiro to dig dirt up on Dave Winfield.

The Yankees constant inability to get good pitchers and thinking buying all the free agents breeds success. (sound familiar?)

-George firing a lot of managers, not just Billy.
-Yes, not winning a world series from 1979-1995
-Mattingly never making the playoffs until his last year.
-Yanks worst record in baseball in 1990. Kevin Maas as your star.
-Dave Lapoint, Ed Whitson, Pasqual Perez, Melido Perez, Andy Hawkins, etc as your starters. Yikes!

Don't forget Jimmy Key and Jim Abbott when they were the aces with Andy hawkins.
And when Matt Nokes was a huge promising farmhand with Maas

Ahhh. I love this thread. Fans who know about their teams history and will talk about the sucky times are the best ones. I don't even want to get started on the sucky times of the Mets franchise...

Well, he did strike out a lot, but that doesn't really matter too much. Thome, A-rod, Dunn... all strike out a lot, yet I'd kill to have them on my team (statistically, cause I hate Rod's personality).

Here's a Yankee fan that doesn't like A-Fraud. He seems fake to me. Plus, he has never won anything except individual accomplishments. He's a damn good ball player though when he's focused. His little "move" in game 6 wasn't thrilling either.

I don't know, Dave Kingman's lifetime avg of .236 and Ob % of .302 is pretty damn awesome!!

Now who was the hot shot rookie in 88 or so that came up with the mets and had a monster rookie year and then tanked it for the next 2 years after that...for some reason the only bust name that comes to mind is that yankee prospect Brian Taylor who blew his arm out in a bar fight
