there were 3 internet connections sitting around a camp fire.
a dialup, an ISDN, and a cable connection.
the cable connection starts to tell a story:
"this one time, at band width camp..."

ok i need help. i'm a c++ nerd but i have noo exp with web-based stuff. i need to make a simple web page for one of my dad's products. there has to be registration/login, product selection, and file upload (users will be uploading database files) . i was looking into ASP c#, but I don't have time to learn that . it has to be done soon, so any suggestions would be appreciate. thanks fellow nerds |
Check how CGI works. Basically your CGI-application (which might be written in C++) outputs stuff (a HTML document, for instance) to 'stdout'. Parameters are passed to your application using the enviromnent (getenv()) and 'stdin'.
If you know HTML and C++ there is no real need to learn a new language.
PS: disregard any spelling-/syntax-errors. I'm too drunk right now to really check them :sadgreen: |

True. However the same principles apply (i.e. stuff is most likely still passed to your application using the environment and the equivalent to 'stdin'), so if one learns how CGI "really works", it'll apply to most languages/environments out there.
There are a lot of libraries that make programming CGI's in C/C++ much easier, almost as simple as in other languages. However python/perl and expecially php have the advantage of being more abstract, in the sense that you don't really have to worry about low-level problems, like strings overflowing your buffers etc.
Still if you know C/C++ well enough, it might get your job done faster (and maybe better) than learning a whole new language. |

I run a major database with about 700 users using Microsoft Access vice C+. Have to stay in Microsoft Office family format so someone could save software in case I died or something and local rules.
Everybody wants something beyond the canned reports I programmed in the software, so seems half my time is spent with query, query every damn day to give them what they want off of the dang database.
Info is power though, so you can tend to be an if you want, since you're the only one who can give it to them. I could probably show up to work about dead drunk and they wouldn't give a hoot as long as I could give them the info they wanted.
LOL!!! Geek power!

Been there and done that too many times and seem to keep doing it over and over again. Customer (higher in my case) wants new changes and , so you do it and are normally left flapping for feedback. Like is this what you want or what?? Dang, throw me a bone or something... Know exactly how you feel.

Think you kinda hit the nail on the head in a roundabout way.
Pay money or employee time to redesign something to your liking, then ignore them when they ask you about something you wanted in the first place.
Gotta love it!

does anyone know when 64bit OS's and apps are going to become mainstream?
i'm thinking of buying a new PC and at the moment i would go for a dual p4 system, but now i'm considering going for an athlon 64 system to make it future proof.
comments? suggestions? |

so.. are you bashing someone that can't afford hardware in your sig? i could't be sure because you always seem to be stealing someone else's ideas and placing them in your sig like it was a creed. |

hoping to one day get hired by Cisco Systems. hopefully they don't get broken up by monopoly claims before i join. it sure does cost a lot of money just to get there tho.
at the moment i am coding software for various people. my friends are always asking for cheats. my ex-boss asked me to develop a management program for his startup business. also asked to develop another management program for the local video store.
network side, i just give a fake card out and i get calls every now and then to cable up houses or small offices for cheap. i enjoy the setup more than the actual money.
most of my time has been spent on studying various certificates relating to qualifications at cisco. its a good thing i got those cisco books from Frys when they had a 50$purchase/50$rebate deal.
i'm not really doing anything special at the moment. if anyone is in san diego, just want to heads up that Sony is currently searching for people to write/refine netcode for their online gaming projects.
right now i just lay back on the net. nothing special. i'm using my spare box to try and collect various operating systems. longhorne has been the only bitch to deal with. anyone know where i can find the 4029 build? the 4051 build is pretty sucky sucky
and then i'm also trying to build my own media center. those microwave boxes are ing expensive. hopefully, it'll replace my dvd player and i can channel out screeners to some of my movies |
