Hmm, I'm running the newest drivers out there; when saying the drivers where out of date I was comparing the features (as in OpenGL extensions) of the newest linux drivers with those of the newest windows-drivers (for the same hardware).
If you search the net, you'll find that the opinions about ATI's linux-drivers are quite low in general.
And how do you know that I'm too "cheap to run a decent system"? The specs are:
* 3.0ghz P4 with HT
* 1024 MB RAM
* Ati Radeon 9600 with 256 MB Ram
* SB Audigy
* 250 GB HD |

Self inflicted. If you want your old performance, then go back to a Win 98 platform. Why did you ever upgrade to an advanced Windows operating system with no power to run it to begin with? Since it's really hard to buy anything under 2G speed these days, I have no sympathy for you.

i already told u, they don't make xeon laptops. besides the centrino's would be better in a laptop anyway. or get a Turion which is Amd's new laptop chip coming out next week. =) |

the reason the drivers suck is because ATI has been trying desperately to work on its windows drivers to beat Nvidia and they have done a fairly good job at it. however they completely ignored the linux drivers for a good amount of time, and the nvidia drivers for linux are far superior right now. Its not because he's ignorant and didn't upgrade his system.
what distro do u run?

dual core processors will be out in the 2nd half of this year however so if you can wait you might want to.
either way i highly perfer amd over intel because amd generally has higher performance / price ratios. more bang for your buck. however in your case both the amd64 and newer "p4's" have 64 bit technology. all u need is a bios update for the intel platform.
btw you're never gonna find a xeon in a laptop. whats the point having all that power if you're going to have a half hour battery life?
centrino's are actually quite nice for laptops though.
as for 64 bit OS's they have been out for years, Linux AIX and Unix. however windows will be out with 64 bit version sometime soon. probably within the first half of this year. |
I must say I agree with you about Athlon64 (although I have a P4 system now.) If I were to build a new system now, no question it would be Athlon64. Mainly because of the on-chip memory controller which basically eliminates a step when data is transferred. There's no need for a front side bus... This removes a big bottleneck, and because of that (as I've researched thoroughly,) Athlon64s are much better gaming systems than P4s. On the other hand, P4s are better than Athlons in encoding...
And all those intel fanboys talking about how Intel processors are faster because they run at a faster clock speed, well I have one thing to say. Clockspeed does not matter nowadays. Athlon processors in general do more work per clock cycle, which is why athlonxp @2.2Ghz is about an equivalent to a P4 @ 3.0... |

my bad .. you are right .. i don't know what i was thinking .. i was probably thinking of servers when posting, when i am really talking about my laptop .. yeah servers=>xeon .. laptop=>centrino ..
and smokeape .. two things ..
1- nah .. not really looking for much sympathy for my "middle standard" laptop .. it runs, therefore it works .. hahaha..
