wow,, thanks guys for the great replies.. and Dawn.. I guesss i meant what it said...the use of cds are cheaper and easier.. but i guess they make more mistakes...
I mean its cool like you do.. if you cant find the track on Vinyls.. why not burn it into a cd.. as long as it works for you...u know? I surely wouldnt like to go see mauro picotto in 2 years changing cds in one of his sets/... i dont want to miss his back-spins :p...
but as long as the dj is not using only cds (which is the case of the guy i saw on halloween) he couldnt even work the crowd,he just stood there and was too busy trying to match the beats, but i guess it didnt work for him.:p

| i am for cd's, i use to spin vinyl but now im in college and dont have the liberty or money to purchase 2-4 records a week that would be at least 40-50 dollars. i also dont have the time to track down records all over town. i spin cd's at all the parties i play at and also use pcdj and traktor on my labtop. i understrand a "tranceaddict" wouldnt appricate it that much, but most people really dont care as long as you make their feet move and give them an unforgetable night. which i love to do |

The first thing I want to say that mixing CDs is NOT easier than mixing vinyl. I've mixed CD's in the past. So before you say something, think well. Even if you own great CD players with pitch control, cueing up the necessary song and beatmatching involves pressing a lot of buttons and lots of attention, it's not as easy as with vinyl where you can manually (i.e. with your hands) spin the record and just release it when ready or mix two songs. Believe it or not, using analogue devices like turntables is in many ways easier than digital devices like CD players!
Secondly, there is nothing wrong with DJ's mixing CD's, and the concept of DJ'ing will not really change. In fact it will never change. For example, there are lots of software tools available today to mix songs on a computer, and you could say because of THIS DJ'ing would decline -- but has it? No.
Somebody here mentioned Traktor as a program that anybody could use to mix tracks. Well, you may be surprised but it takes SKILLS to know how to use Traktor. It's definitely NOT for everybody, it's for a select few who know their s&%t. Sounds surprising, but there are VERY few people capable of putting out a good mix even on a computer.
The reason you're so attached to vinyl is because of the history of DJ'ing. For some reason, in your mind, you always associate the word "DJ" with "vinyl." I have to say that people should be more adaptive, and less narrow-minded. For me, there's absolutely NOTHING wrong when a DJ spins CD's. At almost all the parties I go to, DJ's spin CD's. In fact there've been only 2 times when I've seen DJ's spin vinyl. Dream Girl, you saw this guy spin very badly, and he just happened to use CD's. In psychology we call this the fallacy of association. You say: "but as long as the dj is not using only cds (which is the case of the guy i saw on halloween) he couldnt even work the crowd," That is just STUPID!! There are many DJ's who ONLY use CD's, and they work the crowd like crazy!!!
And one last point -- using CD's is certainly more affordable for amateur DJ's, I mean you can just rip lots of MP3's and have a truly great selection of CD's, nothing beats that!!! Not only are turntables costly, do you know how expensive vinyl is??? I do! |

Well EUgene, master of knowledge, I think you are so wrong,
you say thaat almost all the parties you go to,
DREAM GRL IS NOT TALKING ABOUT TY PARTIES, shes talking about big name Djs, not the djs you see when you go to your lil parties,
And seriously, you said that traktor isnt easy and it takes someone smart to work with it???? HAHAHAHAHAHHA, you definately don't know what you are talking about.
and as for the history of DJ, I think dream grl and most of the poeple who have replied to this threa are right, with the exclusion of yourself of course. HOW THE HELL DO YOU BACKSPIN A FREAKING CD???
I've also gone to parties where DJs use CDs but they are definately not the kind of djs u will ever see spinning for a big crowd on gatecrasher,
like DJ dawn Said and he even uses cds, but I bet you he wouldt do a whole set using only Cds, you gotta work the crowd
And if you say that we shouldnt care about the history that comes behind a dj, then you really dont give a dawm about your job, and maybe thats why you are not one of the top Djs... because you are one of those waiting for something new to come out so you can try it, when you should be following the terms of it.
my opinion.

Yellowbee...
You've just demonstrated to everyone who stupid and immature you are... and I'm very sorry you did that, because people (including me) had a somewhat better opinion of you before. Oh well. I'm glad it all came out :toothless
First off I'm outraged by the narrow-minded idea that DJ's who only use CD's are lame or put out bad mixes or somehow don't live up to your image of a DJ. That you haven't met any doesn't mean they don't exist. People can be professional in mixing vinyl, CD's, or MP3. But there are not that many people who are professional in either one of these! I just have no respect for people who are narrow-minded like that, who are so rigid...
Do you want to send me your Traktor mix so I can critique it? Please do. Didn't think so, BITCH.
No one will EVER deny the fact that you gotta have skills and experience in mixing... as for your post, off -- or as they say in your home country get stuffed. |

Funny you should say that, I thought it was that time of the month FOR YOU :D
It was you who started the bad temper in your post!
If you read my first post, there was NOTHING AT ALL aggressive about it!
YOUR post was aggressive. And that's why I responded like I did.

ok here's my 2 cents
i personally don't think there's anything wrong with CD mixing. the methods might be a little different from spinning vinyls but it still requires skill to do it.
also i disagree on that traktor is easy for everyone. its not. i've sent it to friends who were interested in playing with it and they didn't know how to do jack. it takes time and effort to get it together and know how to use the program so that your mixing will sound as seemless as the program allows you to.
whether it be big parties or small little parties, there is a common goal. to bring the best music possible to the crowd and i don't think mixing without vinyls hardly takes any of that quality away. sure you lose the backspins, scratching and all that but then again not everyone loves that kinda anyway.
i've seen people say DJ's who backspin often is because they can't mix, they up the set because they scratch and scratch and scratch. perfect examples? DJ Jean, Johan Gielen. on top of that DJ's like Armin who uses vinyl (of course) hardly ever uses the backspin. atleast from all of those livesets that i have heard he doesn't. so is it really that much of a disadvantage or that much degrading using cd's instead of vinyls? i don't believe it is.
anyway thats what i feel and guys chillax. its only a forum. :)
EDIT - djslain, thats sick. thank god i didn't say any cry baby ...LOL |

| Judge Jules does backspins. I think in his latest set @ trance energy he backspinned to replay a portion of Brainbug's Nightmare. Also i've heard paul van Dyk scratching sometimes. but i allow him 'cus he can do it really cool, almost like he is adding to the bassdrum |

yeah i know there are quite a bit of DJ's who do backspin and scratch. in fact, i love it when DJ's do those. what i was trying to say was that there are some DJ's who choose not to, like armin and ferry. i hardly ever hear them backspin or scratch and you know what? nobody misses it. anyway think we're going off topic now. :p
anyone want to add anything to this discussion
Vinyl vs CD (and MP3 i guess)? |

Ah, careful with that. Mauro back spins quite a bit, there is nothing wrong with his mixing, I love it! I've heard Armin backspin, and I've heard where he SHOULD have used a backspin, but instead, he just cut the channel being mixed out OFF, and it sounded out of place. I'm not knocking him at all, think he's fantastic at mixing, but comparing people who backspin more so than others has nothing to do with how good or bad they are are mixing. |
