I thought this would be an interesting read, since all of the talk
recently about royalties and legal issues.
Doesn't say which DJ got it though.

An Italian deejay has been fined a record €1.4 million for using hundreds of pirated music files in a well-known local nightclub near Rome. The deejay was discovered with more than 2,000 MP3 music files suspected to be illegal downloads, along with 500 pirated video clips.

The fine, set by the Italian Fiscal Police of Rieti (Rome), is the biggest fine to be imposed on an individual in Europe to date for the unlawful copying and use of copyrighted music in the MP3 format (the fine is subject to administrative recourse). The deejay may be subject to further criminal sanctions.

"We are pleased with the fine imposed by the Rieti Fiscal police," said Director of the Italian Recording Industry Association (FIMI) Enzo Mazza. "This deejay was touring clubs and making money out of the music he played – while those who had invested time, talent, hard work and money into creating the music in the first place did not get a cent. We hope this precedent will serve as a deterrent for those who are thinking of doing the same."

The operation, targeting radio stations and clubs around the region, was led by the Fiscal Police. In addition to the MP3s and music video clips found, a large quantity of audiovisual material and software were also seized.

Sure it sucks to get fined 1.4 million Euros, but at the same time I think most TranceAddicts would agree, it may not be morally wrong to listen to some mp3's without paying for them. But making money off of someone elses music is totally different and wrong.

Curious which "famous" dj this is...

there you go, it was bound to happen really, if you don't pay for the tracks that you spin (excluding own tracks, tracks that was given by other producers&given promos) then you can suit yourself

Now, I would guess he was using CDRs, and they suspected the CDRs were burned from illegal mp3s? How would they prove it? Do they ask to see the original files? Or can they tell that the mp3 is illegal by getting it off the cd? If he burned it as an audio CD, they wouldnt be able to get a hash code from it though, would they?

Maybe he was just using a laptop, and final/serato scratch?
