Kind of agree with you trancecluber, 'epic' trance has had its day and it was 1999. Uplifting is here to stay though.
'Epic' trance is what everyone thinks of when they think of 1999, the trance back then was a much more in-your-face style. The two songs that to me really typify the sound of '99 are Johnny Shaker 'Pearl River' or Pulp Victim 'The World '99' (Moonman mix), they are two of my favourite records of all time but I would have to admit they sound dated now. In both cases they're brilliant riffs and hugely uplifting but not exactly subtle, the uplift is like getting run over by a bulldozer :D
I think what's happened is not that the punters have stopped wanting uplifting music, but just that in the last couple of years, the classy producers have realised that they can produce the same effect without such a sonic battering. Using a paintbrush instead of a sledgehammer, if you will. There's been a real move away from huge -off synth riffs, organs and breakdowns. I'd kind of class 'Push - The Legacy' as the only big '1999' style hit this year. Most of the other big trance hits this year have been more about subtle build ups, lots of strings and filtered breathy girlie vocals: Riva feat. Dannii Minogue - Stringer, and of course iio - Rapture. (We'll all just pretend 'Castles in the sky' didn't happen, OK ... :rolleyes: )
The epic tunes of '99 will always be classics and they'll probably be still getting mixed, remixed and slid into DJ sets for many more years yet. I still wouldn't want the scene to return to what it was though, because the music that's coming out RIGHT NOW is a bit more intricate, a bit more subtle and it's some of the most exciting and uplifting I've heard.
'Uplifting' trance is going to be with us forever in some form or another because it's all about the emotional connection that the music creates, as long as the music that I listen to still gives me that feeling then I don't mind what form it comes in, y'know :toothless |

i completly agree with you on this one.. you took the words out of my mouth..
btw.. anybody: tiesto - flight 643 = trance ?? .. i love the tune but i don't really know of you could define it as trance.. (but i was really surpised when i saw that tiesto produced this one, didn't expect that from him).. maybe the succes the tune had, has not only to do with that it's a great tune but also that it's something "new" .. i believe that if big producers (like tiesto, marco v., pvd the man behind airwave (don't know his name at the moment:D) etc..) tried something "new", they also could score some good tracks!! in this way they could bring a new sound (not just keep "copying") to the public.. |

Please define cheese. Cheese for me (as well as for alot of other TAs) is a simple tune. Just melody and base. Vocals like "feel the beat, dance to trance, feel my love, bla bla".

I had no internet for 2 weeks. When i finally got it. I had missed several nice uplifting trance tunes that i cant stop listening to.

As long as people listen to it (and we will) there will be music there to listen to. And you cant say its bad music. Cause thats just a matter of opinion. Thats like having a big argue about the looks of a woman. is she looking good or not? You cant really come to an answer right? And just because Tiesto left (if he did) upliting trance doesnt mean we have a loss of uplifting producers....new producers will come to take the old ones place.

Are you serious?! Have you been paying attention?? I've seen more "big synth" productions come out this year than ever before... including 98' and 99'. The Ferry Corsten style has been done so much it has almost become redundant. I could probably list about 100 that came out in the 2-3 months alone.
DJ's aren't playing them anymore. Tiesto is playing them as much anymore. That doesn't mean they're not still being made, though. The "classy producers" are catering to club trends and that's it. There's a definite set of people out there that thinks: "If Digweed plays it, it's cool." or "Tiesto played it, so it's the next big thing". This is why I don't go to clubs anymore...too many fake people trying to be trendy.
I've said it before and will say it again: Epic trance will return in some way or another. The progressive thing lasts a while, then people starting craving the big synths again, then back to more progressive... that's the way it goes, it's a big tug-of-war game that's been going on for years.
If club culture really dictated what the masses wanted, there wouldn't be so many people still making "Big synth" trance. If you disagree with me about the amount being produced, head over to trancegate radio - they have all epic all the time, it's all new and no more than 4-6 weeks old... and there's quite a playlist. |

Hmmmm ... sorry to disillusion you dude but club culture really does dictate what the masses want - that's why the likes of Tescos stock huge numbers of MoS albums and all those cheezy Ibiza compilations. The things in fly off the shelves - as long as the punters think they're keeping up with the trends.
Yeah I'm sure there's still tons of epic trance still being made ... the cool thing these days is that any Dutch adolescent with a pirate copy of Reason, a bit of talent and a few hours to kill, can make stuff that sounds as professional as the best studio productions of only a few years ago. But unfortunately the way things are with the dance industry at the moment, 99.9% of all that epic trance is only ever going to get released on very very underground record labels and maybe played on a couple of hard core internet radio stations if they're lucky.
Here in the UK anyway, you can't hear it on commercial airband radio any more and I'll bet you couldn't find a single decent club that still has an "epic trance" music policy.
At the end of the day it's all about getting plastered, going out on a Saturday night and giving it large with a big sound and light system and thousands of other people around ... there may indeed be loads of epic being produced, but it's just not getting played where it counts. I don't wanna spend my weekends sitting in my room and listening to grainy epic trance on my 56K modem :rolleyes: Christ I'd rather listen to ... PROG!!! <--- Only joking ... :D:D:D
We went through a bit of a bad patch there middle of this year, where I was worried about the future of where trance was heading - but fortunately as I said in my original post, a lot of the stuff that IS getting played at the moment I find to be super uplifting, some of the strongest stuff I've heard for ages. |

Techno has been there since the begin '80ies, it has been developed by pioneers like Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig etc.. and without those innovators there would be much less electronic music to listen to for us these days. Yes, even trance music. So please show some respect and don't say such ridiculous things like 2 Unlimited being an example of techno.. you're just making a fool out of yourself saying nonsense like that.
