Is Ishkur correct on Progressive trance? (pg. 8)

Are we really listening to Raffi Trance? Is the stuff that drew us into EDM, the BT's PvD's and Oakey's and whatnot, really dumbed down for our enjoyment? I'm not so sure that I wouldnt have gotten interested in this "smarter" form of trance if I had ever HEARD IT SOMEWHERE. But I just dont understand, how by liking one piece of music I can destroy another and earn the wrath of all the kids who partied in the early 90's, as if I wanted this to happen. Its not even the only thing I listen to either, but it is something I enjoy alot.
Are we today listening to 'trance' that would have been called 'progressive trance' back in the day, and was considered an abomonation to the music that was originaly called 'trance'?
I just dont get it at all, so many people, all of them talking like we are an organization of "trancecrackers" bent on displacing all pure forms of art with pop tunes, I dont feel like it is what we are doing at all. To me, we are just another crowd of kids trying to go out to a good party and have a nice time. I dont get why there is negative stigma attached to our music because it doesnt sound the same as it did 12 years ago, like any other form of music hasnt changed over time.
I admit having cracker rythm and I admit growing up with pop music that I never truely enjoyed. I dont get why I am stupid for enjoying music that appeals to me though, I mean, it just isnt something that a person can change about themselves so easily. Why are other people allowed to listen to music they like and not get picked on for it but we are not? |

Give it a rest, it's not as though this one person is the one who has the most infulential voice in EDM. Nearly everyone on TA has at some point mentioned their feelings about a certain genre of trance. Sure, they may get flamed in that thread... but there aren't 80 million other threads made concerning their personal disposition. |

allow me to sum up Ishkur's contribution or pisstake to the world. He wrote a genre guide that had snappy things but it was accurate to a degree. It pissed off the elitists and it will always be debated for its accuracy. I hated him at the start, then I realized he was far far ahead of his time, pissing on idiots...genius really. He posts on here and yup it will always be argued. It's certainly well travelled in terms of being linked, if you want to go by it, you will suffer, if you want to learn some stuff, then go read more stuff on a genre, then it might help you

I know who raffi is, I grew up listening to that, my whole friggin childhood. They even played it in my 1st grade class while we were trying to learn how to add and subtract. I have a videotape of a raffi concert too. Maybe it is a west coast thing, I spent my early chindhoold in california, never heard anybody talk about raffi after I moved to NC, but that might just be my experiences alone.
Would you guys please define progressive in musical terms? I mean, you all seem pretty good at complaining that nobody else has, why not do it if you think that everyone else is a stupid wanker for not trying?
Personaly I dont really think we need tta or sandstorm's opinion on this, take it as you will I'm not trying to prove anything with it. I'll like what I like and I dont feel the need to justify myself to kids who dont like it.
But I would like to challenge the notion that enjoying trance makes a person stupid because of the way it has changed over time,
and that trance musicians took measures to make their music more accessible to the masses. I think that idea is more of an internet fabrication than it is a reality, I think alot of the trancers out there just make the kind of music that they like to make, without bothering to compromise it for public enjoyment. You guys make it sound like everybody took space age innovative tunes and purposely took out the uniqueness of it while thinking "those idiots will have to like this!". I just think it is a load of BS, it might be true for a few musicians, maybe even a few really big ones, but you cant just pigeonhole all of trance because burned with desire kinda sounds like castles in the sky.
I think alot of kids honestly enjoy the music because they think it is fun, and not because they need pop melodies, and I think that alot of trance producers make music for their enjoyment rather than as a tool for stardom. These kind of things cannot be proven, unless you can read the minds of all the musicians and all the party kids. We can play the example game all day but the theories will never be backed strongly enough to make that 100% assumption correct. |

Fred Penner is lesser known in the states, I think though.
