Unbelievable night, incredible DJ’s, incredible venue. Blank & Jones destroyed the place.
Where do I start…
I would actually like to start off by saying how awesome it was to meet everyone I met Sunday night. I have no clue what most of your names were and even a vague recollection of your faces but I do remember meeting MARCUS and ROB- awesome seing you guys, you guys are AMAZING! For all you who do remember faces, I was the short guy with the black billabong tank top, beige cargo’s and the cap ;) I was pretty much dancing the whole night in the crowd right in front of the stage.
I got to the Olympic stadium early, around 10:30. No line up- coat check seemed small for such a big event but it was quick. I GOT CARDED- after coat check, even after getting searched, about 3 or 4 guys came running after me asking me my age and since I lie about my age ALL THE TIME I wasn’t quick to give them a answer… lol I am 20- it was great. “are you sure you are 20 sir?”
So my initial thoughts while walking in were:
- this place is small
- ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww hip-hop
- who are these people (the crowd at 1030 looked very much like a crowd of 16 year old girls awaiting the arrival of Britney spears)
- why did my friend Tracy get whistled at and taunted in the washroom by 15 italian jocks. (have you ever seen that happen anywhere else?)
So lets say I did not see this night evolving AT ALL. Boy was I wrong …
---THE DJ's---
So my night started off with Marco G who never fails to impress. He made Bal en Blanc for me so I wasn’t planning on missing his set. He was amazing as usual and got people moving by 11, including me and my friends- sober.
Christopher Lawrence totally surprised me; not by being good- but by playing hard beats. Most of the stuff I have from him is a lot softer and melodic and was expecting such at Swirl. He brought down the house and was the initiator of my FANTASTIC NIGHT!!! He looked SO happy and GRATEFULL to be spinning for us, it was amazing. HE AGNOLEDGED MY PRESENCE and waved back at me when I waved at him, it made me so happy lol. Didn’t recognize anything he played, good stuff though.
Chris Leibing, wow, how do I describe how incredible this guy was. I had NEVER heard anything of his before but I had shawn05 praising his name for the couple of days before Swirl so I was expecting something good, but not that good! He was so intense, he made me so high (on the music of course lol) and this was good cause I had just been going through one of my “these are not working!” phases. Those progressive beats were mesmerizing and exhausting to dance too, I was in no way complaining though! My one complaint of the night was that he played a little too progressive, by the end of the set, I was not amazed by the beats, they were becoming expected.
I think the night was divided into two parts musically, this first half ended off with a more techno feel, which I loved to hear for the first time in a while- it really killed me physically tho because if you had let yourself go with this stuff on the dancefloor, you were recked by the end of Chris Leibing’s set, as I was… Thank god Armin came through with some slower trance beats.
ARMIN VAN BUUREN kicked off his set with some slower beats and I was lovin’ it. This is my second time seing Armin (yes, only second…) and again, he did not fail to impress. ARMIN ARMIN ARMIN ARMIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I screamed over and over and over- I was in heaven. I have never been so moved, so happy, so happy to see a DJ so happy. Like someone said earlier, he has this way with the crowd, you can almost see in his eyes what he has in store for you next, what he is getting ready to put on and he reads in his audiences eyes what they want to hear. Just looking at the audience during this set was so moving, everyone was facing him, praising him I couldn’t believe it. He started off looking tired (5 nights in a row!) but as he went on, he got so much energy from the audience and he thanked us with an unbelievable set. Perfect silence … Can’t you see … OMG OMG OMG. One of the best moments of my night … and Adagio, OMG … I’m a insane Tiesto fan and was not at all upset (like some of you) that this song was played twice, I just had to look around me to see that no one around me was either. My BIGGEST REGRET OF THE NIGHT was missing Burn With Desire, I ws in the bathroom for 10 minutes during that set and it was during that. Mistakes? Oh god, I was too happy to care…
BLANK & JONES … blank & jones … what can I say … incredible. There is actually very little I can say about them other than they were perfectly what I expected them to be; they played everything I wanted them to play (even a little Tiesto;) ) and looked more than happy to do it. They looked so in touch with the they were playing, their spinning and audience interaction almost looked choreographed and so sharp. My songs of the night were, by far, with perfect silence, DJ SILENCE and MIND OF THE WONDERFUL. I can’t believe they played it, their whole set I had been waiting for it (MOTW) and every so often I thought I heard it and ran to find my friends, butt It was never it. At about 9:30 I started to give up on it and stoped thinking about it … then … then … the greatest thing happened … “I miss the mind of the wonderful …” I swear to you I can barely remember it, I was shocked, and happy and my body was tingling, my eyes were tearing (im sure other things were helping this feeling) and me and my two best friends were just jumping in front of the DJ booth in one of the best moments of my lives (I’m sorry if I’m sounding too intense for my own good)… and that moment in the track when everything goes silent and they DJ’s were taunting us with “when is it gonna come? When is it gonna come back in !!” was the best moment of the night. “I MISS THE MIND OF THE WONDERFUL- I LET THE ICY THOUGHTS RUN THROUGH ME COLD… AND NO ONE KNOWS!” amazing night …
-sorry, I got carried away in that blank and jones review!
-question: did they ever play Secrets and Lies? Because I did not leave them once and I didn’t hear it but someone I know did.
--OVERALL---
This night was amazing, I had the best time I have ever had at a dance event and am actually VERY upset of the fact that I can’t see anything really topping this for a long while? I really wish I was back there to take more of it in. I am also glad I got to share this night with some of my closest friends, Steph & Tracy (Tracy was that girl in the white bikini top sitting on the guys shoulders RIGHT in front of the stage when Armin was spinning the Sensation White theme, Serenety. OMG DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THAT TRACK!! I can’t believe he played it!!), Shawn, my good buddies Dan & Chris!! This was an insane night.
See you all at Cream, or any good events beforehand?

Simply amazing.
Swirl was by far the best rave, afterhour, edm event ive attended.. BeB didnt have a chance to compete.. Cream and Celebration were both great nites but still uncomparable. Swirl 2005 was the definiton of a flawless nite. I never went to one of these events and been simply blown away by ever dj. The venue in my opinion was perfect.. when i first walked in, it felt and looked like Aria (in a huge room).. intimate vibe, plenty of room to dance, lots of friendly smiling faces, beautiful girls. I had such a trip on those two big screens and such a great idea to have cameras in the front and back of the dj and displayed on those screens with the effects.. watching the djs mix, play with effects, and pump up the crowd on the screens was a nice addition.
So ill start from the beginning. First off I wanna thank every one of you who i went with, met inside, and met for the first time. Each and every one of you made my night that much better. The usual suspects, Misho, Wisnia, Deluca, Monika, Dajana + all our buddies, a party is never a party without you guys. Each and every time is a blast with you guys and we managed to stick together this time (unlike at Bal) and that made a huge difference. Love you guys, cant wait for the next one. Was a huge pleasure partying and dancing with you gd_nimrod.. hope to party with u again soon.. Great seeing you again Marcus.. I get the feeling im forgeting people.. sorry if i forgot to mention you.
We got inside around 12:15 with easy parking and super fast entrance. I had no idea what to expect from Christopher Lawrence, but this man blew my mind. I never appreciated hard techno, hard trance until I heard his set. 10 out of 10
I never seen Liebing live, but all the crazy stuff i heard he does while mixing, i knew id love the guy. As i expected, there he was going nuts behind the deck, pumping up the crowd to the max.. in my opinion that makes a great dj.. he loves what hes doing with a passion and he loves to see his crowd go crazy. Watching him on those big screens was too much fun while he was pumping up the crowd and playing with the effects. 10 out of 10
Armin. 11 out of 10. Thank you.
Blank & Jones for me was a good way to finish the nite. They didnt exactly end the nite that well.. They coulda done one more song for the crowd.. They also pumped up the crowd.. in a gayer more fifi kind of way in my opinion, but still trippy watching them sing and make those expressions with their faces and hands on the screens. 9 out of 10.
Los drogues. 10 out of 10. Made a satisfying difference to the nite.
Some of you put down those on drugs at these events and the things they do.. but the highlight of my nite was still peaking during Blank & Jones and Adagio for Strings was played for the second time that nite, a couple of my friends lifted me in the air on my back for one of the best trips of my life. At the end of the song they put me back down and my head felt still up in the air and i was just left in another world like an out of body experience.
SO many tracks were played that me and the crew have been waiting to hear and they were played back to back to back by every dj. Cant get much better than that.
We all left when the music stopped at 10. A huge difference between Bal. After BeB me and id say most of the crew left so disappointed, so down, depressed for days.. me and misho even at the point saying we raves, drugs, even ibiza. We left Swirl felling great, begging for more.
So we all left together, most of us met up at the usual 767 after after hours (Mishos place).. some of us crashed, some of us chilled around.. people came people left. At 7 that nite misho starts mixing.. he summed up 10 hrs of Swirl for us in an 8 hr set from 7 to 3 am replaying song after song from the nite... Thank you bro.. the perfect way to close the book for Swirl 2005. Im done writing, monika and misho complaining im writing too much. Cheers. |

| What the I don't get that. Why don't these people (514) just record their sets and post them on their sites. I mean, it's sort a waste, you have these HUGE dj's together for one night and yet you don't take full advantage of them. I'd love to be able to relive my memories. :X |

So you add a clause saying that they get x amount of money from an album release of it. Wouldn't that work or am I barking up a tree many have tried before? |
