Err before I quit my job last week to stay extra time in Jamaica.....I WAS working on a critical care unit for teen girls who have been severely sexually abused, tortured, and physically abused (think: one girl was kept in a dog cage and tortured and raped until authorities found her at the age of 12) :( Rough stuff like that. Great job and experience, but it was worth quitting and staying in Jamaica....sooo stressful and depressing :(
Now I am starting grad school in Manhattan at Fordham University, and plan on becoming a sex therapist :) |

Holy.. where the hell have I been on this thread?? LOL
I work as an Account Executive for HSBC Finance in Kitchener. I just started there last month and prior to here I was at CitiFinancial for 5 years.
I specialize in personal loans, LOC's and mortgages (might I add and rediculously high interest rates). Also gotta fit the collections in there as well :)
I love it though.. it is something new everyday and has been an experience and a half and now I am just working towards eventually becoming a manager someday! |

Fayraree: It is such a great job, you really develop a bond with these kids because your heart goes out to them, as well as they really need somone who cares to cling on to. The world is a sick ass place and New York is at the top of that list. There are soo many sick ass stories like that:
One boy who entered our preschool (he is like 4 or something), 6 months ago was continuously raped anally by his father. The damage was so severe, he had to have anal reconstructive surgery. it turns out, the father was knowingly infected with HIV and spread it not only to his son thru rape, but also to his wife (who did not know about the HIV or the molestation of her son). Sick ass people. Makes the day go by quick but its almost not worth a fast work day :(
btw: My biggest support is my amazing staff, who are just amazing, supportive, and good people in general. But coming home after a long day and listening to trance OF COURSE is a HUGE release for me. Always wish I had someone to teach me to spin so I could REALLY take my mind off work......it causes some sleepless nights for sure!
(Sorry bout the long ass post)

I really do look up to people in your line of work. I used to date a girl who had been abused as a child. I met her child psychologist at a social function, and we started to talk to her about her job. I said to her that her job must be so hard sometimes. They way she looked at me, put her hand on my arm, and said simply "yes..." made me drop a tear right there. You people definitely make the world a better place. |

Miketg: thanks for your kind words......I really appreciate yousaying that, because the job really gets to me sometime.
Fayraree: hehe you don't need to cry for me, cry for them!! I just get to listen to them. I am their case manager during the day, so what I do is speak to their judges, parents (if they have any), probabtion officers, and social workers. At night the good part starts. I get to bond and chill with them, learn about them, and give them someone who cares.
But its not all peaches: sometimes they have flashbacks and become extremely violent...I have been in restraints hundreds of times. But rest assured, they never intentionally become aggressive towards staff, they just have no other outlet. My job has made me become a really strong person. ;) Btw, i can't WAIT to meet all of you SOOON!!! :) |

That's what I meant!!! It takes a tough person to handle those issues and actually add value to those kids' lives...
I also volunteer at a community centre every Friday night for youth in my area (Malvern in Scarborough...consider it inner-city youth) and I also hear about some effed up sometimes but it's the success stories and positive advice that keep me going there, to show some of these kids that there's hope and they can actually make something with their lives...I love that kind of stuff...this also keeps me away from partying on Fridays but recently I have been coming out after my shift there...(instead of sticking around and playing sports with them till about 1 am...I've been feeling really guilty about that! :() |
