haha, correction: it's fun making fun of candykids, or cyberkids, or what have you. ;)

U obviously never tried esctasy whist at a rave with the amazing atmosphere. Im to put money on it that if u have a good pill u will love it so much u wont ever want to go back to raving without. People who say its rubbish usually have had either a bad experience first time or they got hold of some dud gear. The experience cant be described, opens up a whole new world. ing awesome. |
lmao dude i have done a lot of drugs in my day. a lot of e, acid, mush, k yada yada yada, i'm not here to list em. i agree that a pill can make your night much more pleasurable, and really, i'm not that against them. incidentally, while i was rereading my posts, i think i came across too strong in my anti-drug tirade, but oh well. i just don't like how kids (and i emphasize kids) use raves as an excus to abuse drugs. it's just senseless and it is what has brought so much heat on this scene. granted there isn't as much news about X anymore, but the damage has been done and the rave scene will never be looked upon by the media (or adults, or any other authority for that matter) the same again. also granted that we shouldn't care what those people think about our scene, but those are the people that ultimately set the guidelines for how 'legal' raves are thrown, and has quite literally destroyed my city's scene.. so..

i thought the picture was quite appropriate. ;) |

| I have been to parties in Toronto and it is horrible the ammount of twinkies hopped up on drugs laying as puddles on the ground. And the worst part is that most of them are 13 and 14 year olds. I mostly see this kind of stuff at Hullaballos (a Toronto production company, not so surprising that their parties have the most overdoses in the TO area). I also party in London (Ontario), and have in my hometown Sarnia, and I don't see as much of it there. Actually, I never see that kind of stuff in London or Sarnia, except the G-tards that roam the parties. I hate G-tards. I went to one HHC party in Buffalo, NY and let me say that I was kind of disgusted at all the little kiddies hopped up on E. At 14 I didn't even know what ecstacy was. |

Dude. Ok. Let me count to 10. Done.
WHY DO DRUGS NEED TO BE PART OF THE RAVE EXPERIENCE???????
sorry.. maybe I needed to count to 20. But seriously, candy kids are exactly what is wrong with this scene. Heatbag bastards. They are the ones that are shown on 20/20 t out of their mind on E.
They don't add to the aura.. they detract. I despise them with my soul. I don't hate them because they dress stupid (though it doesearn my disdain.).. I hate them because they are what the media makes us out to be. They can have fun (drugs) in their own apartments.. oh wait.. no they can't. Because they are all 15 or 16 year punks that are lying to their mommies and daddies about sleeping over at Susie or Bobby's house. |
I know that I'm a little late and all and you said the thread was closed, but I just want to speak my mind and I'm coming from a different perspective.
I personally don't agree with your opinion on all of this, but I respect it and that's all that matters. But there is one thing that I think you should open your eyes to. You talk of how the media makes of us. Since when does the media have a control over what you think and do? Think about that for a second. You want to know what I think... THE MEDIA. |

The 'scene' as it were is different throughout the world, and only loosely joined by he music and drug aspect.
Candykids (US/Canada phenomenon I take it)
Cybers (UK)
Rushmies (SA, we call themt his coz of their trade-mark phrase 'Yussis my bru, I rush me in my poes!')
Now, candykids I cannot comment on, as I have never experienced them, but they seem like how the scene was many years ago back in the happy-hardcore/goa/gabber days.
Cybers, who I have had limited exposure to now that I am in the UK, are totally acceptable people, they just enjoy looking all flashy.
Rushmies are the bane of the SA club scene, as they just go to parties, chow as many pills as possible, and sit there rushing their off.
Now here's a where the differences between scene's can be scene.
No self-respecting SA clubber would call themselves a 'raver', coz thats the generic term used by people who are niave and new to the scene. We prefer to call ourselves clubbers.
You dont anything remotely like candykids or cybers in SA, people are generally dressed smart/casual, mainly coz the clubs are smaller and more intimate.
I think that the main thing that is causing the scene so much damage is the attention from the media. It has resulted in it becoming commecialised and the 'in thing' to do. More and more people are starting, mainly for the drug aspect, which is a little sad.
Being a frequent user myself, I feel a tad hypocritical, but it was the music that originally got me into the scene, the drugs just happen to be a happy by-product.
This being said, the scene would difinitely not be what it was/is today without drugs, I rate the drugs having prolly been about 35-40% of the importance of the scene, with music being at 65-60% (sad, but true)
Now, most of the non-users out there hate the users, and us users generally only hate the ppl who go and get piss-drunk in jeans and a white tee-shirt.
As for guys hanging around trying to score easy (aka. fooked) girls are REALLY annoying, but you get those in every scene.
I've only been in the scene for 4 years, so my views are still pretty virginal, but having had input from my bro who's been at it for 8 years, so I like to think of my views as at least midly informed.
I just dont think there's any use in complaining, its not within our power to do anything, so we may as well just try and enjoy it :) |

Well i read through that and now that its back up to the top it wont hurt if i say something =-p plus its like.....2am anyway.
First of all this topic is all over the place. It seems people come to defend there use of drugs, you don't have to. Nobody is naming names and even if they named your "group" that doesn't mean you have to defend yourself. Also because this topic is al over ill state "MY" stance on certain things. I don't live where you live, i haven't been where you have, this is what i see and what i think. If you have a problem with anything i say please keep it sane. I'm not attacking anybody/group, or am i saying anybody is wrong and I'm right. This is opinion remember no facts, well maybe some but bah whatever. ok so ya.( HORRIBLE GRAMMAR AND SPELLING AHEAD BE WARNED)
::: DRUGS AND LABELS :::
First of all i don't like labels at all, so ill try not to use them. Nobody fits into one certain "group" or label. Right now for the record i don't associate myself with any group, nor can i relate with one more than the other. There is group of people that does more drugs than the other. Also there is no one type of music that people on drugs flock to. While it may seem that way it is not.(not factual, opinionated) People may say jungle attracts the most drug users. Personally at Jungle shows, i NOTICE a lot more people on certain substances. Keyword is NOTICE, i mean come on how many people show up for jungle events compared to trance, or any other music for that matter. Look at it this way if your in a room with maybe 10 to 20 people, will you notice if there are more people of one race than another? What if your in a stadium full of people, would you say hey there sure is a lot of X race in here? (you may look for that kind of thing in a stadium i don't so please don't jump on me for that comparison you get what I'm saying) Its unfair to Pont fingers at X group and blame them for destroying the "scene". I can understand being mad because its reflecting upon you, but there is nothing you can do about it. People assume I'm on X-substance because i go to the club a lot, or because I like X music. I could care less what these people think, they can hold their heads high because they listen to Xmusic and would never do xdrug. Weather you do drugs or not, you are no more a part of the "scene" than anybody els. The "scene" is what you make it. You cant point fingers and blame people for something you create. (Now don't trip out. My definition of the "scene" and the way i look at it may differ from yours, read on.)
::: THE SCENE WTF IS IT:::
Ok really now. Personally i think the "scene" is what you make of it. On second thought I think its just a word, nothing more. To all you "Scene" people, what is your scene? Id really like to know (not being a dick or sarcastic id really like to know. My views on this are completely different than most) If you could write a paragraph about your "scene" id like to read it. The scene your into, the scene that you love, the scene that started it all for you. If you do choose to do this, even if just in your head, think about this when your done. (don't read past this if your going to do it id like everyone to at least think of like one sentence, that sums your "Scene" up) Now this doesn't work for many of the "angry at the scene" people, but think/read about what you said. In your "scene" did it say anything about a bunch of drugged up people messing it all up for you? How about a bunch of sober people trying to hold your good time down? Most of the time i would have to think no. In "your scene" its all about the good times and such. If there is nothing negative in your description, then how can things bother you if they are not even there? If you have negative in your scene then your in the wrong place. All the time i hear X "scene" USED to be good. The way i see it its still gravy. Its when you adopt all the negative into your ideals that things seem bad. Negativity is a virus that just spreads the more you think and worry about it. F&(% them man, that is it. Your there to be in "your scene" and have fun, nobody should be able to take that away from you. No matter how many people ask you to blow them up or if you want a rub down. No matter how many people point there fingers or give you a "there messed up bad" look. Your in the scene of YOUR life. You make things the way they are so please don't blame somebody for having a good time. When there is a DJ spinning, big or small you should be having fun. Easier to throw blame down other peoples throats than to swallow some yourself.
::: I'M NOT RIGHT WRONG PERFECT OR POINTING FINGERS:::
I only write this to make you people think. I don't think I'm right,wrong or better than anybody els. If at any point do you interpret it that way I'M sorry, i did not mean it in that respect. I tried to make it so anybody could relate, what ever side of the "group spectrum" you fit on. How i party really has no effect on anybody or this discussion. You can take it as a load of BS (Most Will) or you can think about it and relate, or even change the way you may look at something.
::: I LOVE TRANCE AND I LOVE TO PARTY :::
There is no better feeling than being in a packed club/venue listening to the music and knowing that people around you are on the same level. You may not be on the same level as some, but you can tell who's with you. Its amazing when you can look a complete stranger in the eyes during a buildup, and just know what they feel. No words need to be spoken, everything you want to say need to say and should say, is perfectly comprehended on the other side. The connection between a complete stranger and yourself for that tiny speck of time on your lifeline is one of the most powerful things. You may forget them in a minute, you may linger on the unspoken words for months. This is more powerful than any negative force. There is nothing in that speck of time. Good bad, whatever it may be. There is no universe, floor, sound, light, dark, just a direct link of thousands of words and thoughts. Links like this never go away, you always know that there is somebody out there on your level. When you leave the club and the sun stings your eyes, your still conected. Conected to a bunch of people that you most likely wont ever see again. Things like that should far outweigh anything thats bothering you. There is going be something you don't like no matter where you go, you can choose to ignore it or let it devour you, its going to be there either way.
::: CONTROVERSY :::
WTF IS ALL THIS? you may ask. It has nothing to do with anything. I just felt like writing so BACK OFF :p Now i know somebody is gonna have something to say about all this. Cool feel free to ask me anything you want. You can call me crazy laugh or whatever I'm open i can take it. (not to rough though I'm skinny) If i didn't touch on certain topic it was probably because i know it would start a big war. Things like the media and bla bla bla just get me all worked up, different thing all together. Also people that go for the music that still like drugs, thats total grey area. But most dont have problems with these types. I also realize that this is not a drug/anti drug war, so don't point that out.
::: LAST SECOND THINGS :::
I cant totally see where alot are coming from with the whole "scene" being overrun with drug not music people. But you must realize that for every person on drugs joining, there are way more for the music behind them. Even if you can cant see them they are there.
::: SUM IT ALL UP FOR LAZY PEOPLE :::
- all my opinion thoughts jumbled up
- X group doesn't do more drugs than Y group
- Cant blame X group for destroying "your scene"
- "your scene" is what you make it
- connection with complete strangers is stronger than any negative
- have fun
- I'm not trying to be cooler or better than anyone because I look at things different
- feel free to make fun of me or any ting i said its late/early
- i like pringles
Big thanks if you could stand reading all that.
::: EDIT :::
Now that i read it again i can sound a little harsh sorry. Overall there should be no blame placed on anybody, and just have fun. It may be hard whene there is a mass of bodys in the middle of the floor but just see what you need to see to have a good time. Everything is gravy. |

but semi-on topic
Iv said the exact words many of the people in here have said. But when you stop and think about what your saying it makes you wonder what it would sound like from sombody elses mouth. Every place and every person is diferent. All in all try to meet yourself in the middle, and if you cant, see what you want to see, and dont worry about the rest. bah 5:41am pass out time. |

kudos on a well written reply. :)
i see only a further chasing of the tail if i reply, or if anyone else does (see my original post of "stop posting here!" :D)
i guess, when you boil it all down, i was pissed (and still am) at non-clubbers (or poser-ravers, or whathaveyou) doing drugs, overdosing, and gaining stupendous amounts of media attention and having the 'man' crack down on my parties. all i want to do is party, but with mofs like our friendly T.O. mayor or the police chief of Toronto, it is definately difficult to even throw a party anymore. You can say ' the media' but the media presents an image to the average middle class home where most party kids are found, filling their parents with awful Oprah-esqe images of extacy overdoses and holes in the brain. These parents, who pay the salaries of certain mayors and police chiefs, make a public outcry and these public officials act in the best (albeit uniformed) manner they can: they attempt to nip the problem in the bud. and here i am in London, Ontario, where there hasn't been a rave in the last godknowshowmany months. so boo-urns.
my scene is where i am. it's my aura, your aura, the vibe, the clubs, the music that flows through the clubs and the people. when someone overdoes because of their ignorance and neglect to 'their' scene or self, it damages my 'scene' because of the rammifications (think of water rippling) it incurs after the authorities and media have dragged one incident through the mud and left it to bleed out on television and the front page. so when i see t-up punk teenagers rolling around on the ground, or in the middle of the dancefloor, i tend to get slightly bitter. they are the ones destroying this abstract concept we've come to call the 'scene'. i don't mind people popping a pill, or doing a phat bump of K if it makes their experience that much better; i just don't want to have to trip over them on the motherfecking dancefloor (that is a metaphor. ;) )capice? |

i think what's tragic here are some people's puritan attitudes towards drugs
just because you dont take drugs DOES NOT make you morally superior to anyone who takes drugs (the reverse of course is true also). it doesnt give you the right to judge, and they have the same right to be there as you - they've researched the night, paid the money, worn the appropriate outfit so they have as much as a right to be there as everyone else.
and how do candyravers/cyberkids ruin your night anyway? if you are truly there for the music, then the fact they are in a corner looking at the floor and not saying anything isnt preventing you from having a good night is it? in my experience i have NEVER had ANY kind of trouble from anyone tripping on E - not something I can say with alcohol which is destroying a lot of things here in the UK (but the alcohol vs drugs debate is not something I want to go into right now). In my experience the people on E are the ones who
1. make the most efforts - i have seen some stunning outfits in my time, all custom made. I have a couple of custom made t-shirts and im proud of them as I made it and no one else has it
2. make the most atmosphere/noise. they are usually (though not exclusively) more knowledgeable.
3. are the friendliest. whenever ive been under the influence i just love meeting people and talking to them
4. have the closest bonds with their friends. E and the whole clubbing experience brings people together and builds bonds that nothing else can. and please do not contradict me on this one if youve never taken E, that would just be silly
i had the same experience as one of the guys above - for about 18 months i went out stoned cold sober, didnt drink or smoke anything all night. it was good, but after a while i reached a plateau. i wanted to go to that extra level.
i am now at that level. i have had some amazing nights, and yes i do remember everything. there were a couple of times when i took too much, but its just like alcohol - a certain amount of trail and error has to take place before you find the combination that suits you best. and no, taking them doesnt make me big or clever, but not taking them doesnt make you big or clever either. and i have been to events without them since, notable a few john digweed nights that were awesome
i would like to conclude by stating what I think are the problems facing the EDM scene. having spent some considerable time in the USA and Mexico (sorry, not in Canada but I have spoken to a few Canadians, some very intelligent and well spoken) i have come to this conclusion.
its exactly the puritan, anti drugs ultra conservative view of many north americans thats killing the EDM scene. out here in the UK, no one cares. yes we have had a couple of clubs shut down because of drugs but there were always other factors involved. the biggest clubs - gatecrasher, godskitchen, fabric, slinky have (imo) about 80% of people on drugs at most events. in my experience i have also found that the "harder" the music the more E is taken (ie i think the most E is taken at hard house/hard trance events).
the result: this weekend in london i had a choice of 5 club nights to go: Dave Seaman, Armin, Steve Lawler, Oakenfold, Darren Emerson or Sander K, not to mention Global Gathering. Last week i saw Sasha. And thats every week.
(this is gonna be controversial and I make no apology)
North Americans, it seems imo, need to become more tolerant towards other people and cultures. its exactly your kind of viewpoints, that you want to have only people like you at raves, that is the root of the problem. imagine a club full of people like you - it would be boring, in the same way that a club full of people like me would be boring. what you need is a mixture - its the mixture that makes EDM such a unique and enduring scene.
At the end of the day, id rather be living in london, taking drugs once a month and enjoying myself with other people who feel the same rather than be like you and never go out...
and if you dont your local scene you can always stop going
no one if forcing you to be there |
