Ok, doing a little research on my own and I guess the most conveniet choices are Redhat and Mandrake (Since Linux is a pain in the ass to install). The only reason why I'm a little hesitant to install eighter one is that once I'm familar enough with Linux (which should take a long time), I might want to switch over to another distribution that's less noobish (for lack of a better term, Mandrake seems like a really noobish distribution). Any comments or help from you guys would be much appriciated.

Knoppix, Mandriva/Mandrake and a few others have "live" cd's if you want to try testing it out.

Also I would try any distro that says it for n00bs.

havent tried mandrake or redhat in a while, but a few years ago i tried both and i must say that redhat (fedora) is my clear favorite of the two! pretty simple to install too! but less windows like than mandrake!

You're more than welcome shaolin_Z.

Did I mention that Mandrake/Mandriva seems to be making a major push on the Linux market?

They have just merged with Connectiva amd now have a stake in Lycoris.

All we need now is one day for Linux to have a final coup de grâce over Windows.

The reason you get it on your laptop or pc is because of a thing called monopoly:

MONOPOLY, commercial law. This word has various significations.
1. It is the abuse of free commerce by which one or more individuals have procured the advantage of selling alone all of a particular kind of merchandise, to the detriment of the public.
2.-2. All combinations among merchants to raise the price of merchandise to the injury of the public, is also said to be a monopoly.
3.-3. A monopoly is also an institution or allowance by a grant from the sovereign power of a state, by commission, letters patent, or otherwise, to any person, or corporation, by which the exclusive right of buying, selling, making, working, or using anything, is given. Bac. Abr. h.t.; 3 Inst. 181.
4. The constitutions of Maryland, North Carolina, and Tennessee, declare that "monopolies are contrary to the genius of a free government, and ought not to be allowed." Vide art. Copyright; Patent.

Linux vs Windows (a comparison)

One thing no one is mentioning is that over 90% of all virii, spyware and malware are written for Windows machines.

Those of you with suddenly sluggish computers could attest to that.

Yea ... thats because 90% of home computers use Windows.

If everyone was using linux hackers would write viruses for linux - its not like its more secure then windows, you simply have less people attacking it at a constant basis.

I love this open source example:

Apache have a 70% share on web servers, yet IIS with their 10% market share or so have like 90% of all the successful hacker attempts ;)

@Yoepus

That's counter argumentative since the server market share is a doppleganger of the home user:

It's like saying you'll be more sleepy or tired when you live in the Artic circle. Or you'll more likey to catch a cold or worse in a hospital.

Hackers are constantly at work. Don't you think it to be more lucrative to attack a web server than a home pc. Sure home pc's have been used as slaves to cover tracks but really who the hell wants to see someones pictures of their 50th wedding anniversary or their kids graduation?

Just finished installing Mandrake 10.1 on my laptop. Now all I got to do is a bit of cleanup regarding permissions and then I can watch my movies at work while I'm idle. Mandrake 10.1 plays divx out of the box BTW. Try doing that with that other OS.

Interesting link. Learned some stuff I didn't know earlier, like how linux is on the rise now that's it has a solid GUI and more and more mainstream apps. Sweet. I love open source.
