Linux vs. Windows (pg. 3)

Windows 2000, XP Pro

XP was already installed on my computer when I got it, and I have my old registered copy of Windows 2000 Pro that I have running exclusively on my old computer. I actually have my new computer set up as a dual boot (Win XP Pro/2000 Pro on a 74GB SATA WD Raptor) for redundancy, knowing the way Windows operates.

I don't have Linux installed but I do run Knoppix here and there from a CD. At one point I had SuSe running but I didn't use it all that much because of the relatively limited amount of programs available.

I've also been fooling around with Longhorn (build 5048) a bit, but am not about to run it as my main OS as it's still way too buggy.

I tried longhorn 1.5 years ago or so, it took up something like 700mb in ram...

You do realize that is unsupported beta software. I wouldn't go throwing that in any mission critical machines.

Then again Windows is general is in perpetual repair anyway.

The copy I have was released by Microsoft at the last
Windows Hardware Engineering Conference

It's supported through MSDN's WinFX newsgroup. :D

I have 3 different SATA drives I can swap in as C: so that's really not an issue.

That was most likely the pre-alpha, something like 4-5 builds ago.

I just got the 4074 (dunno about this build number) and 5048 (WinHEC) from ed2k. When I feel adventurous I'll try it.

Also just finished getting Fedora Core 4, Ubuntu, Yoper, Arch and Slynux Linux distros. Gonna try them all one at a time to see how dumbed down they are for n00bs, not including FC4 in that statement.

yes, it was the first release that made its way into the public (although not officially). At the time i saw nothing good whatsoever with it tho, like win xp but much worse!!!

i have both a mac and windows. :D

NeoPhono
Didn't see this one the first time around.

I have a dual boot machine in which I run Redhat Fedora Core 4 using GNOME (linux) the majority of the time, and then I use Windows XP (grugingly) for the applications I can't get to work using a Windows emulator like WINE and that I can't find a good alternative for under linux.

My lovely desktop...
