City Councillor attempting to ban hip-hop nights.

So, I'm watching CH News Hamilton.

Turns out Sam Merulla, one of the councillors is putting together a proposition to be presented to council in October that would ban all hip-hop themed nights across the city of Hamilton.

Recently, Hamilton has had 2 gun-related violence incidents that are apparently being linked to hip-hop. One being a man shot at Ottawa and Roxborough streets in the East End and one at Darley's night club in Stoney Creek (suburb of Hamilton) coincidentally on a hip-hop themed night.

I know there's a lot of talk of the relationship between hip-hop and gun violence, but this is the first I've heard of city politicians stepping up like this. Any thoughts?

Meh, whatever takes the spotlight off the big bad "ravers"

....temporarily, im sure...

Stupid, listening to a type of music does not make you shoot other people.

I hate hip hop but banning it is complete BS. Its no better nor worse than when they tried to ban raves (and mostly succeeded).

This time though im just waiting for the useless "racism" cries from the usual peanut gallery.

Politicians are such idiots.

this is true. but it certainly can influence you... some people really don't have much to live for and live and die for the streets. hip hop is their music. taking it away definately will not solve this problem though.

Way to set precedent... What genre of music shall we ban next?

This is ridiculous. I remember when they put through the 'anti-rave' law they defined EDM as "a series of repetisious(sp) electronic sounds accompanied with excessive bass frequencies" or something like that.

I can't wait for their potential definition of hiphop music.

Good point man!
I never really thought about it that way.

That's a slippery slope, it could easily turn into something sketchy like an "urban music" ban, and who knows what that might encompass.

I dont agree w/ this at all. I think its ridiculous. Complete BULL just like when they tried this w/ raves. Same , different genre. I'm just as opposed to it.

In the UK the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act defined it as:

63. (1) (b) "music" includes sounds wholly or predominantly characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats.
