True. I like to use the Malstrom as well to add some high end brightness to the supersaw. (Sawtooth*16 waveform and Square*16 with negative Shift value are good ones)
The unison is nice, but I think it can sound kind of fake sometimes, so it should be used with caution imo.
I've never tried modulating the phase of the subtractor oscs before, I gotta try that. :) |

From what I can tell of the supersaw it isnt actually that bright. Its kind of a trick of the ear I think. When trying to copy it on the Virus, I noticed you dont need a massive high shelf at all. There actually sounds as if theres a dip between 8 and 12 khz and a tiny high shelf above 15 khz just for a little bit of hiss. Theres also alot more bass between 30 and 250 hz when you are playing notes below C3, possibly because of all the stacked up saws that have their fundamentals in this range.
The hiss is exacerbated when you stack more saws on. So for instance, If I render my Access Virus B using the full 24 note poly, then clone it and play both back simultaneously (the copy slightly detuned and widened), it makes the hiss sound more prominant. Part of the trick is to do with the number of saws you are using.
I used to build Virus supersawish pads with much less saws and had to ramp up the post EQ alot more but now I dont think its quite so necessary, at least to the extent I was doing it before. |

Earlier in this thread, someone tried to compare the supersaw to Trance as the guitar to rock'n'roll or the violin section to an orchestra. This is a really short-sighted comparison. For such a broad generalization, it might be more accurate to replace the word "supersaw" with "synthesizer" instead. Every rock'n'roll song will feature the guitar, but there are tons of Trance songs before and after the introduction of the JP-8000 that don't feature the "supersaw" at all. While I can appreciate the desire to defend the integrity of the supersaw as a legitimate type of sound that will always have a place in future electronic music if continually used creatively, please don't push this idea that it somehow defines all of Trance music. This has been mentioned repeatedly in here and it should be made clear that there are countless Trance pioneers and artists who have never and would never use such an overblown frequency hog like the "supersaw" in their music. It might best be described as the signature sound for Anthem/Epic mainstream Trance and those travesty simplifications of great orchestral works by the likes of DJs such as Ferry Corsten, but there are many sub-genres within Trance that don't use it such as Acid, Psy/Goa, Progressive, Dream, Tribal, Ibiza, etc...
It's kind of ironic in a way. I don't personally find anything "trance" inducing about the supersaw at all. If anything, it's so garish and in your face that it is almost the antithesis of where Trance came from and its early development. It's like comparing the music of Erik Satie to Richard Wagner. One takes you on a journey to a dreamy place, while the other pumps you up for an orgasm of epic proportions.
With that said, I actually like supersaw for certain songs. It works well in sparse arrangements when you want a melody to dominate the whole frequency spectrum, but lets not overblow its importance to Trance. It is just one of many different sounds used over the years and will by no means make or break the genre. |
