Before labeling something as degrading or disrespectful the viewpoint that it comes from needs to be acknowledged. Although you may be of Iranian decent, you are also male, live in a Western country and go to a Western University.
As a Western society I don't believe we should try and alter laws in other countries to fit 'our' views of what is appropriate.
If Western society wants to step-in I feel it should be to help organize these commuties at a grassroots level to help them attain the rights and freedoms they want.

for your information. I've lived there for 11 years. I've seen it all. i label it disrespectful b/c many are FORCED to wear veils against their will. If it was a tradition, then i would have to agree with you. Its not a tradition. It's forced upon people. People in Iran no longer care about politics/religion as much as before. 70 % of the population is under 35 years old ... the 10-15 million in tehran SMUGGLE alcohol / drugs, theres prostitution everywhere (secretly/underground) there are many issues ... this is just one ...
SPORTS + RELIGION/POLITICS should not mix |

also they have public executions/amputations every friday in a stadium

I'm fully aware of that.
thats another topic. girls in iran werent allowed to ride bikes. b/c their ASS would stick out and that would put dirty thoughts in a males head. until, the girls started riding them regardless and its now tolerated.
People in iran are publically executed ... hanged from a crane in front of a mass of people adult or children. journalists are put in jail for lengthy periods for expressing their thoughts about the government... etc ... girls in school are checked every week for signs of pedicure or eyebrow plucking !!!!
and yess, we hardly hear about these things |

It is true that womens rights in Iran are not as they are in other parts of the world...but I dont think those pictures demonstrate that. |
actually i think these pictures demonstrate the opposite.
they are able to play soccer.
that is awesome. i had no idea.
i believe this is a good thing.
and they have to dress like that to stick to their religion. they aren't doing that because they are oppressed. |

why not cover your hair?
(wondering question, not attacking) |
A very good question indeed, however, I choose not to discuss my religious beliefs and why I don't cover my hair on this website. If you'd still like to know you can PM me :) |

I see,
Freedom of religion + speech is lacking...
therefore, its not a good thing. IT'S NOT tradition. |
