today is the jewish day of atonement.
there is nothing on tv (except a few foreign channels).
all buissnesses are closed.
it is illegal to play music in standard volumes.
and more out of curtesy (my parents' curtesy to be accurate) than law (thankfully there isnt a law to porhibit this yet), i can't cook nearly anything.
Why? |

if people can't 'observe' the holiday or fast because they are faced with temptation, they can't 'observe' the holiday or fast at all.
and they should definitely stop delluding themselves. |

| there is nothing illegal to open a store or drive a car or listen to radio (afterall you do have internet). People simply do not do those things out of respect. Similarily there is no law against closing a store on Christmas. Just people don't want to work on Christmas. |

Who's right, who's wrong, the excitment is overwelming.
Okay I have no clue about all this (I'm only posting cause I should sleep/write that English essay :p).
When you say there is nothing on tv, you mean it's only crap on tv, or that it is actually nothing on tv?
And there are some stores open on christmas ;) |

i mean there is nothing on tv, not crap programming.
and about the music, at least as far as the general perception goes, it's illegal. |

i know a few drugstore owners who would keep their stores open throughout the entire year if they could.
and there is a HUGE clientele for them today to sell to if they could.
on and i forgot one more thing that's illegal to do today - drive. |

It is no more illegal for them to open shop on Yom Kipur then on the Saabath. Some landlords might make it illegal, but the government does not. Don't believe, go take your car (see below) and drive into an Arab village.

This is a misconception. It is not illegal, people simply do not do it. Afterall incase of emergency you damn well are gonna drive. In America it is "forgiven" that you must drive to temple and back as everything here is so frekin far.
Plus I don't see what you are complaining about. It is the one day of the year when you are "forced" to go out of your house or do something productive. And there are no cars to run you over or smog you to death as you play on the street. |
