So does anyone actually like Experience by The Prodigy? (pg. 5)

However the fact it's gone 'personal' is just an indication from me of your arguing style, that you seem to refuse to even consider being wrong or different and have to have the last say in everything, which is unnecessary |
That last paragraph I quoted is what we call an ad hominem, where you decide to criticize (or in this case, insult) me as a person instead of addressing my arguments. It's a typical response from someone who doesn't know how to counter the arguments presented, and I've seen it dozens of times. Furthermore, it's easy to see from your way of arguing that you have a strong emotional connection to the sound of this record, and as such respond accordingly when people criticize it. It doesn't make you much of a debatant, sadly.
As for my arguments, noone here has denied that Experience sounds very dated. And as I said, it certainly gets the job done. However, for those who have no particular connection with the rave madness that went down in the UK at the time (and we are looking at it as objectively as possible here), it will sound quite irrelevant in the year 2005.
As for me never realizing that I'm wrong, I'm not even going to dignify that with an answer. |

I don't get this thread.
An album is 12 years old, and it's getting bashed for sounding dated? Well it is dated. This is why it sounds dated. Of course, this is all still very subjective. As someone said, Out Of Space still makes regular appearances in sets today. Okay, not the original, but it's laughable to think that the EDM scene would stay the same for 12 years. The fact that a track that's 12 years old keeps getting remixed and keeps getting played shows it hasn't aged that much at all.
Or is it getting bashed for sounding amateurish? This was their first album, no? Does every group reach their production quality peak right with the first album they produce? I could argue even that it actually is very well produced, considering the very limited amount of resources they had to work with. Secondly, I don't think The Prodigy ever tried to be 'brilliant producers' with that album. It was meant as something fresh, exciting, innovative. They became brilliant producers with their later albums - to this date, there is still a lot of tracks from FOTL and MFTJG that sound absolutely brilliant originally, and have absolute crap remixes. I'm convinced that there will never be a better remix of Smack My Bitch Up than the original, same goes for Voodoo People, No Good, Their Law, Breathe, etc - I could go on and on. |

i've heard plenty of older albums that don't sound dated.

why does it deserve special consideration as a result?
this is one of the only ways to judge/rate a musical piece as objectively as possible. what would you have us base our "bashing" on instead? |

This statement is subjective, opinionated, and thus pointless to argue.

Well certainly you have to cut them some slack given that it is their first album and given that they weren't swimming in money at the time. Or will you say that even considering those 2 constraints that it's still badly produced? |

and this is where you are wrong, "dated" can be clearly defined, and among most of those discussing it here, there is a consensus on what constitutes a dated sound and what doesnt.

i'm not arguing about the prodigy specifically here, and i dont want to give you some ammo which you will use in inappropriate ways, so i won't type my opinion.
a good reason why constraints are irrelavant is because you can't possibly know all the constraints of every piece of music you listen to, so you don't have the knowledge base to compare between one piece and another. |

People are giving it high scores for nostalgic reasons. There no musical quality to speak of. Imagine if the album was released today. |
look man, this is one of the reasons so much trance is so ed right now.
the music the prodigy used to make was like rock n roll - it had raw gritty emotion....and im not surprised it doesnt appeal to some of todays trance fans who seem to find sterile, highly produced music to be the ants pants. |

| Dated, yes. Sounds dated, no. What sounds dated to me may not necessarily sound dated to you. |

has anyone in this thread contradicted the opinion that the prodigy's first album sounds dated? no.
has anyone contradicted me or others when we mentioned other examples of music even older not sounding as dated? no.
and if you are arguing sementics, sounding dated does mean in effect being dated in this discussion, they were both meant as one and the same in my previous post. |

an album's commercial success is not a way to determine it's production values. |

| I wanna take a diferent stab at this. Why exactly do you feel it was produced badly? |
