I'd never heard of Hughes that much until after his loss to BJ Penn. I've picked up every UFC DVD since that PPV and man, Hughes is probably THE best fighter i have ever seen. Not only will the guy not tap, but he is never finished by the submission that seem to have a dead lock on him.
I don't believe it has anything to do with friendship with franklin, besides their weight division. Hughes was set up a match with Matt Lindland, who i believe is also a friend.
Honestly, i've never seen Arvolski fight except against Datsik, who is probably the funniest MMA fighter i have ever seen. This guy gets in the ring and jokes around like crazy. AND HE KNOCKED ARVLOSKI OUT.
I think tim sylvia sucks.
