Waitresses r people too! (pg. 3)

Every job I've ever had has had to do something with customer service.
I've seen/heard just about everything from my colleges including being the subject of a complete lambasting in a situation that wasn't my fault.
It was completely humbling let me tell you, when the world stops, and only thing happening at that moment in time is you and the red faced individual yelling from across the room.
(readers digest ver: I was waiting, taking care of the non-smoking section, everyone came at once during a Sunday buffet, someone has to be last with their order, unfortunately, mine :sadgreen: )

I feel for anyone in customer service and you have my complete respect but you'll be the better for it.
If you can handle those types of situations, you're the stronger for it and in the end, it's a win/win which is really what everyone wants. ;)

working security and being friendly about your job doesn't work.... I worked for a bar for a year and bit and had a bottle swung at my head for asking a customer if they had a ride home, as they were leaving with car keys in plain sight in their hand (swaying from side to side).
I got spat on, punched, had one guy threaten to break my arm (funny given I train heavily in joint locks!), the cook got thrown over the counter when he came out to ask how the food was... apparently it didn't come quite fast enough, some don't understand that wings take 15 minutes regardless unless they were made in advance!
Escorted a guy out of the bar (ie walked him out talking to him) I then look out the window to see him accross the street pissing on the outside of my car! (the next weekend I saw him, he was removed a bit more forceably and with less cause)
I saw a guy leave $100 in the ATM, so I go get it and go to give it to him and let him know that he forgot his money... I then go to the server covering him and let her know to keep an eye on him to possibly cut him off (I mean what sober person leaves 100 bucks in an atm!) he then comes up and tries to start a fight with me for calling him out on being drunk... he was hammered and fell over to the ground as he swung at me.
Everytime I was nice about something I would get crapped on and taken advantage of. So after a while I more or less gave up the nice guy routine and traded for being a dick. I had to quit a little later bc I didn't enjoy that role either and would prefer to be nice.

awww, that really sucks that ppl were like that!! It would b great to see more security guards and bouncers who visibly look out for ppl like they should.

Working in the service or retail industry means dealing with difficult clients.

Unfortunately, MLB is right, it is part of the job. This is why we need bullies in school - to prepare us for the bullies (or just s) that we're inevitably going to face as adults. Personally, I think that if you're getting upset over someone who doesn't say hello and make small-talk, you're probably going to end up in tears when you get the REALLY bad patrons.

If you don't like it, quit. I'm sure the tips are nice but there are thousands of other jobs out there you can get that won't put you into contact with as many jerks.

I agree on the point that being in contact with ppl like that does have some positive benefit, because u do learn to deal with it and u learn to let it go. I odnt care for small talk or anything like that but what gets to me is that someone walks in and assumes their right to not use common sense manners because its my job. We all hve jobs and we all have to work to make a living. we all share in the pains of having to walk into work regardless of what we do (unless u love ur job). so why would we for a second decide to leave out a simple hello or acknowledgement for the person serving you, weather its in a restaurant, store whatever?? It goes beyond waitressing. im sure weve all had days where the smallest act of kindness goes a long way. Theres enough going on in everyones lives and around the world. whats the harm in being polite, honestly. It all comes back to us anyway. Its one big cycle.

I can totally see where waitresses are coming from. I worked in a 5 star resort cooking and pantry work for 5 years....... i know people make mistakes and that but I would never yell at them because i konw what type of people they are dealing with out in the dining room.... the stories i have heard about people treating waitresses are just mind boggeling. Some people can be rude its pathetic..... for instance i went to a diner and it took over 1 hour to get our food...... and the waitress was doing the best she can...... we never got upset but as w were leave little did we know all hte kitchen staff was watching the hockey game so we now knew it wasn't her fault... people just have to be patient that's all.

Anyone seen the comedy Waiting? Hilarious.

I could care less about making small talk, but like InMyPlace said, its great to have some effin manners.

And if you are going to go out of your way to put me through just for a meal, you better tip me accordingly. period.

And one more thing, I am positive that these same people who some in and are s to servers, come from their own job dealing with s, so they should know better:mad: Treat people how you want to be treated.

Sorry to hear that, girl :( I always respect the waitress as much as I can, and when she's cute and gives me a little extra smile and attention, I tip a whole lot more! ;) LOL you all remember my "bartender at clubs" story that Diginut totally hated! ;)

Waiter/Bartender here 8 years...
Seen done it all, it is part of the job to be treated like shizah, however it doesn't make it right. People have snapped their bloody fingers at me (best way to get a squirt of Rose's Lime Cordial in your eye) and whistled at as well (best way to get a "special" meal or drink)there are ways to make your the restaurant fun trust me. We kept a book at this one place I worked at and wrote down everytime some jackass did something stupid, annoying, or funny. It was a great way to spend those long straights with the staff, reading what those dick customers did. Our industry, with all the bad, is still amazing. What other industry has you going out with your co-workers almost every night, or having a couple drinks at your bar when your finished. You get to know your fellow staff much better than a normal gig, and in turn build up amazing friendships. So don't feel discouraged, hun, think about those office 9-5 zombies next time you have a bad night!

Also what other industry makes 50,000+ a year tax free?
hehe

The smallest act of kindness does go a long way and there is of course no harm in being polite. My only point was that it gets you nowhere to find fault with the people who forget because they are absorbed in their own little world. Especially with something so simple as not saying hello - maybe their mind just went on autopilot and they got ahead of themselves, it's happened to me sometimes and I'm sure it's happened to you too.

IMHO, people only seem to notice the rude ones and ignore the polite ones, when it really should be the other way around.

grrr, one of my biggest pet peeves!! I work as a waitress and once in a while we get the customer who forgets their manners. Hes sitting down and i walk up to him with menu and cutlery in hand, i go to say some form of a greeting and before i can finish, without even looking up he starts naming out his order, " over easy, sausage, ..." yadda yadda. ...buddy, if ur sitting down to eat, im sure u have the time to remind yourself im human too and that it wont kill you or effect ur appetite (unless i havnt slept all night:P) to say hello! Please u guys. If u or anyone u know has that habit...
its very irritating to the servers.Besides, if were irritated we wont give u the service we would have otherwise...and u might get more than what u ordered with ur food:tongue2
Fell free to post some stories of rudeness from ur workplaces! maybe some of who have actually said something back to a rude client/customer??:)

As much as some customers are idiots. Its your job to always give them the best service possible. You arent getting paid to like or dislike customers. You are getting paid to do your job.
