What is going on with trance

I just listened to a set on ETN.fm.

Okay.

What the hell is going on? Trance is basically turning into melodic house. Seriously! I followed that up by listening to some Deep Dish and I can't tell a lick of difference anymore. O.o

I asked this over on AP too, but where do you producers think trance is headed? Everyone over there seemed to say techy/minimalist.

examples of what you think is pure trance?

Yeah - Trance is hard to define. There are so many sub-genres that it's hard to say where the line is drawn between trance and other electronic genres. I'd say the melodic synths have the most to do with defining trance but then there's probably a sub-genre out there that would prove me wrong on that definition.

same i thought the same thing today too, although i cant even remember what trance actualy sounds like if you know what i mean!

i guess trance is getting very much to hard to define with so many subs and influences it lost it's original sound but what was that original sound like.

anyway im a bit confused with this matter, i will have to listen to alot more to see where it has evolved.

by the way i think the sound your refering to is a bit of the PROG sound maybe.

to me trance is along the lines of paul van dyk, i have listen to his sets and really like to call some of those trACKS Pure trance, but thats just my opinion.

cheers.

Trance was initially dark and repetitive, and TRANCE LIKE! :D
Now it is not really trance at all is it?

It's seems you just listened some progressive dj set. Its nothing to worry about mate :D

I dont think that trance will turn into melodic house..its just progressive trance/house that getting more and more popular. Prog has been there all the time but not that popular like now.

Just becouse you heard "trance channel" and there was some "progressive" set it doesnt mean that trance will turn into animal or something :). I played at ETN trance channel pure electro house some weeks ago :D lol.

Anyway!
Peace!

Progressive trance and house is really hard to seperate, but I just think of it as melodic trance, house and "Progressive", no matter what kind of progressive music we're talking about (house or trance).

And you shouldn't be constricted by genres, if one genre collides with another, then those two styles form a new genre, that's just the way music works, and that's how all the "breakthrough" comes to live:
musicians change = music changes = a new style of music is born.

Trance is turning into house... or house has already turned into trance?

We may never know.

Really, all trance ever was was tech house with a dash of EBM for flavor. I'm actually pretty glad that it's been heading back towards the slow-moving, trippier prog sounds.

The stuff on the radio went a step beyond progressive. When the lead is a simple square and there are no pads, I think you have yourself something a bit more minimalist than progressive trance.

I suppose I'm old school- I still think there was a lot more to be done with epic trance in terms of instrumentation, music theory, etc. Unfortunately, it's mostly dead.

I have great appreciation for dark, early 90's revivalist trance- but I make trance, personally, because it's the most beautiful of the EDM genres. I hope it never loses that beauty!

I dont know that it matters too much where Trance is going... we can still produce whatever we want. You know what I mean? I think its just producers that were originally doing trance switched genres and havent really realized it yet. ;) Eventually that will change.

Today I was thinking of scrapping the trance track I was working to make it more housey. :eyes:

The groove is infectious... best of both worlds.

The same question is asked by a whole bunch of people every couple of years after the current production fad is over. People get used to a sound and complain when it starts changing again.

Anyway, I think your referring to epic or melodic trance which is a sub genre in itself. The only two original forms of trance were goa and circa 95-96 style euro trance (harthouse, noom, react, early platypus stuff) which was far more minimal than todays trance sound. Beats, melodies and synths were much more sparse than the layering which goes on today.

If anything, I think getting away from the big epic sound will be good for the genre. Its been done to death and needs a break form it for a while. I'm sure it'll be back and re-invented one day but for now theres definately a drive towards more electro/prog sounding stuff. But yeah.. make whatever you want dude. No one stopping you from leading a melodic revival ;)
