I almost never read the COR anymore, and I really enjoyed this debate.
I'm not sure where I come down on this, but I agree that it's ed up when people use pregnancy as manipulation.

The fact of the matter is, there can be A LOT of repercussions of the use of abortion. |
Carrying a pregnancy to term is far more risky in terms of the woman's health and life statistically speaking. |

You're lucky in a way not to have to worry about pregnancy.

I don't understand why religious fundamentalists want to bar selling the MAP over the counter if they really care about reducing abortion.
That just proves to me their real agenda is anti-sex, and also a neo-Taliban mentality of regulating what goes on in private between consenting adults.
All it is is a high dose of one of the common hormones used in the pill.
There is a high dose regimen of regular BC pills the woman can take also that has the same effect as taking EC. |

Look. You don't HAVE to pay . Of course it'd be nice to have legal grounds too, but nobody has control over you.
If you're too much of a to move or take control of the situation, have fun paying child support for a child you don't want.
The end. |

How are women devoid of risk?
I could sleep with a man who had told me that he had a vasectomy, and then become pregnant. |
Women are not devoid of risk of getting pregnant, but they are devoid of the risk of having to raise the child if they don't want to.

You know prior, that if a woman gets pregnant, she will have 100% choice in what happens. You inadvertantly accept these terms when you have sex. |
Yes, that is how the current laws are stated, but that is not necessarrily how things should be.
| quote: | | But being that it is her body, she should not be forced to do anything she does not wish to do. |
It is not her body. Your argument would stand if people would procreate by themselves as asexual beings. Yes, her body is involved, but the thing growing inside of her is not an integral part of it, it is an independent and potentially sentient being. The fact that it temporarily depends on the same metabolic proceses to survive is not really an issue. If that was what mattered, then siamese twins should be considered a single person.
Ultimately I really think that tribu's solution is a good one. If the girl wants the baby and the guy doesn't, let her raise the child. If the guy wants the baby and the girl doesn't, pay the girl compensation for the pregnancy and let the guy have it. Or alternatively, if one wants the child and the other doesn't, have the one who wants it the right to upbringing and make the other one send monthly payments.
Of course, exceptional cases like rape, malformed children, and potential hazards to mother's health should be excluded from this. The important thing is that both partners here knew exactly what they were doing and what they could get into, and abortion is just the easy way out for the irresponsible people. |

I find it pretty sad to see how broken our culture has become regarding responsibility towards children. I think its pretty safe to say that a lot of us drug & musical orientated, sensitive folk came from less than optimal upbringings, so we know all about the effects of broken homes and parents who don't give a damn. Why lobby for more of the same ol' sad crap? We don't need more broken people walking the planet...we need more kids growing up feeling wanted and loved. And less kids in general......but thats another issue.
The fact is that women sacrifice a lot more than guys when they get preggas. For starters it can spell the end of her career...her power base in life....and thats no small thing. Her body changes too, which really messes with a woman's identity and confidence. And she may die too. It happens.
I think its wrong for women to manipulate men into having and supporting kids....its a classless act and I hate when i see it happen. But the REAL answer is not to absolve men from all responsibility for the children they create..... a much better solution is to excercise some discernment in your sex life. Sleep with good women who communicate and negotiate. Don't sell yourself short and risk your financial wellbeing on women who don't care about you. Make good choices in your love life, and if you can't or won't do that, live with the consequences of your poor judgement like everyone else. Its part of growing up. |

This post from another forum IMO is what all this is about.

This isn't just about child support from the man either. Being a single father with custody of my daughter, it took me 8 years to start getting child support from the mother. She didn't have to go to jail after 6 months of not paying like a man would, nor have to pay 8 years to present. Just the last 2 1/2 years and anything leading from this day forth.
This case is going to help the 100,000's of us single dads get into the light and some rights also. Women have been stiffing us just as much as the guys do, but it is never made public.
I hope the media blows this one up huge. Let things start becoming equal as they should be. |
