who is still a vinyl DJ? (pg. 4)

In the long run its obvious digital DJing will win.

but I believe that this evolution towards digital djing is a slow progression towards live digital production.

The goal of djs has always been to provide a unique sound and performance. In the past djs searched for and hunted down gems and hard to find records or did live mash ups. Now djs play exclusive promos and special remixes/edits. The next logical step is to produce and remix tracks live to give optimal results.

oh, i know its being done.

but I meant that more and more dj will pick up stuff like Ableton and so on, and there will be a decline in the number of djs.

I feel that spinning with vinyl is on the decline bigtime, but I still prefer to use vinyl (for the time being that is).

There is definitely to me a different... sensation when spinning vinyls than cds. It feels more... authentic.
But, practicality over sentiments I guess. :)

I agree with this, but as much as I hate to admit I ultimatly feel that there will be fewer vinyl dj's down the road as quite a few people these days prefer to use cd's.

Vinyl definitely has A LOT of sentimental and historical value to it.

but I also think it kind of has to do with the fact that records are primarily a DJ's tool. whereas CDs are used by everyone.

the one thing i love the most about vinyl is all the pops and static u get when ur playing it. Each own record is unique and it has its own pops. It's very sentimental to me anyway. All i know is whenever something comes out that changes the industry, it gets alotta critisizm first. I remember a few years back and the same argument took place. I'm just happy aotta ppl are sorta seeing the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Id never give up vinyls... its the touch... the feeling... the sexiness.

I think we've had this discussion before. Probably several times before. What I notice is that in previous discussions, a lot of people were really quite zealous about their vinyl usage, making arguments like "mp3s sound like crap in a club, blah blah blah, etc". It's funny that almost nobody's making those kind of arguments this time around. Are people finally starting to realize that digital DJing is the way of the future and those that stick with vinyl are just gonna get left in the dust?

I think some of the negative sentiment associated with CDJing comes from the fact that just about any prick with a CD player can claim to be a CDJ... it doesn't take much passion to go download a bunch of MP3s and throw them down at a party, a dance, or whatever. DJs who go out and buy vinyl at the record store are more "hardcore" in that respect, and perhaps just going on beatport or whatever just doesn't feel cool enough for them, because it's just doing what every other average joe does when they want some music for a party or something.

i play with vynal but i'm going to get cdj's sometime soon cuz i want to spin goa/psy trance and i can't find any vynal for it.

I love how people who have touched vinyl or CD's for maybe a month or two are 'experts' on the topic on DJing and equiptment use on TA. :haha:

There are many reasons DJ's originally switched to CD's. Here are a few:

  • Easier to crate a CD case around instead of 3 vinyl boxes
  • DJ Promo's began coming out in digital format instead of pressing promo's
  • CDJ1000's have a buffer on them, so it greatly reduces any skipping
  • No worry about dust or other crap under the needle
  • When talking with Ferry Corsten, he pointed out that when playing big outdoor parties, that it gets windy and sometimes flips the vinyl up or the tonearm off the record, hence the obvious option to try CD's
  • Not having to worry about what needles are at the venue
