Hmm, i thought that Sven Väth was techno mainly... |
he is, but he also produced a lot of trance at the start of the trance scene and ran one of the first successful trance labels Eye Q with the Cygnus X boys |

| the way I've heard people use the word "neo-trance" seems to imply something a bit more than an attempt to make a distinction between the classic trance sound and the stuff coming from the big trio. They all talk of new developments and "moving forward" much like the prog crowd did, and much like the prog situation it leaves me wondering what is so different and revolutionary about it. |

here is what google pulls for neo-trance:
| quote: | | The buzzword: neo-trance. It's trance without any bad breath or fluorescent tubes, it's pure and fresh. It's gentle euphoria. For a better Ibiza. For a splendid summer of love 2002. |
-that one came from a site selling music by somebody calling themselves KAITO
http://www.last.fm/tag/neotrance
-shows 2 artists tagged under the term neo-trance

| quote: | # Now...what exactly is neo-trance? Well, "micro" expanded beyond house very quickly, as all of the current interesting electronic music started being made in the "micro" world. So trance hopped on the bandwagon too. How is it different from microhouse? Well, microhouse is funky, glitchy, and tech-housey. Neo-trance is smooth and slightly ethereal (like trance!), with tiny beats and no buildups - so, it's basically microtrance. But some of it isn't micro. And this is why people are confused by electronic music.
#
# Anyways, this stuff is getting really big. Kompakt's "Total" series now outsells every other dance music compilation by unprecedented numbers, tracks are starting to get radioplay, the world's top DJs are converting into this sound, and even the most conservative adding it to their playlists - clubs are starting to play it, and critics are going wild |
-this is a list, 60 tunes called microhouse and neotrance, as if these two styles are somewhat connected, this page seems to imply that neo trance is that tiny microhouse asthetic applied to trance music.
Alot of german and japanese sites show up in the google search too, not much english, but I did find this review for a party that happened in tokyo:

| quote: | | Tejada tore into a four-and-a-half-hour DJ set that dug deep into the dancefloor, and then ripped it apart. Again proving that he cannot be pigeonholed, Tejada skipped across a number of styles during the set, from solid minimal techno, to the melodic Border Community sound, to rocking acid, yet brought it all together into one cohesive whole. Vital in anchoring the entire set were the incredible basslines; the structure of the music was rock solid. Even when Tejada dipped towards an almost neotrance type style, it was not airy-fairy, head-in-the-clouds music; this was a set with its foundations sunk deep into the ground. |
It seems to center around this german label called kompakt, never heard any of that music before. Here is there mp3 shop: http://www.kompakt-mp3.net/
so yeah, alot of buzzwords, not a very solid definition, one of those wierd terms you hear people whisper before it becomes part of the common vocabulary, doesn't seem to have a standard definition, but reading the word in a vath interview leads me to beleive that it might be more than a mysterious empty buzzword. Anyone else know more about this "neo-trance"? |

"interesting to hear Väth’s take on ‘trance’ as he sees trance as 'a state of mind’, rather than a certain genre"
+1
That's what I've always thought
Trance is pads, filtered synths and the feeling, not always uplifting and melodic stuff |

Funny to see so many familiar names coming up connected to "neotrance". Kaito is quite well known, and even get ocasionally some appreciation on this board. They do this easy-listening ambient stuff with lots of proeminent pleasant melodies, not too far off from ambient remixes of epic trance.
But you're right, to me it seems that "neotrance" is a buzzword that sounds quite pretentious yet could possibly have the potential to finally turn trance into a good direction. Just taking a guess since I don't know much about it anyway. |

I just hate feeling like I am always the last person to hear about these things. I am living in a musical desert, everything always comes here last. Whenever internationals come over it sounds like they aren't even trying compared to their stops in bigger cities.
And the internet can only do so much to make up for that lacking, one has only a limited amount of time to dig through the web to hear about these things.
But if there is something to this neo-trance, then I want to know, from the looks of things so far it is still something relatively new. |

i gotta disagree with a lot of what you said.
i don't think dj's like sasha and digweed got popular playing trance, true they used to incorporate some progressive trance into their sets, but it's pretty different from the trance that say tiesto, pvd, above & beyond etc have always played. they got famous doing what they still do...playing music with fantastic basslines and grooving beats.
as for tech house being formulaic and boring, i'd have to disagree again. i don't know how much you actually know about the genre, but one of the beauties of it is the huge assortment of variation in sound. and as for artists like smith & selway, wally lopez, etc incorporating more trancey elements into their work...i disagree. if anything the opposite is true. |
Wally Lopez recently released a remix to BBE's "Seven Days One Week". Do you consider that song to be Trance? Most DJs and fans do, and Wally's remix pretty much stays true to the original. The main difference is that the tempo is slower.
Like someone else said, Smith & Selway also recently released a couple of beautfiul tracks that are more melodic and trancy then what these guys usually come out with.
As for Sasha & Digweed, from the mid to the late 90s they were considered Trance's most elite DJs. They may have started out in the early 90s with House, but their names blew up bigtime when they championed Epic House and Progresssive Trance. All those long ass breakdowns people always complain about in Trance - Sasha & Digweed were the ones that helped make that a staple of a Trance set.
Even before then, if you listen to a lot of the Trance records from Sven's labels they had this long 2-3 minute intro where there was just this very mainstream sounding looped melody before the beat finally kicks in. Nowadays that intro has become the breakdown part of Trance. Again, read the Above & Beyond interview in DJ Mag from February as they touch on that subject as well.
Sven used to be a lot more anti-Tiesto...until Tiesto gave an interview in which he said the reason he (Tiesto) got into Trance was b/c he had the chance to see Sven Vath play in the mid 90s. |

If you change the structure of a specific genre doesn't it change genres?
meh who really cares... |

The problem with 'neo-trance' is that the people who came up with it have no idea what trance is to begin with. "Oh it's ethereal and smooth, like trance!"
Dumbasses. |

i don't see anything about the suggestions that guy gave me to suggest a genre called "neotrance". i just found as many of the samples of the artists and tracks he selected and it just seemed to me like they were all some combination of Deep House and Minimal Techno. |

PS Above & Beyond nailed it when they mentioned that a lot of the vocal pop Trance comes from countries where English isn't the primary language. That's why the lyrics are very cheesy and basic. |
true ... but If it weren't for the producers who made cheese then the dispersal of EDM would be stifled significantly. It's funny how newbies are usually in to commercial (cheese) until they eventually get introduced to more of an underground quality...
I want to hear one of Sven Vath's recent sets, preferably one that ties into with what he had to say about trance in this interview. Also i gotta say i never was a fan of Kompakt, mostly comprised of techish sounding production, not to my liking. Neo- Trance, sounds familliar, ive heard this term associated with Razed in Black's style in his performances, compilations, and productions. |
