meh who really cares...

you have a point there. if it evolves into something else, it's not trance, it's that something else. but what this movement seems to be about is the original *idea* of trance (long, hypnotic, repetitive), and it doesn't hurt to explore that further. if that's possible.

These polls are a great example of why statistics are often misleading. If you look at the number of clubs worldwide playing house, and the amount of house records still being shifted, then you'd get a much more accurate representation than a poll of a minute sample (no more than 100k people) of a largely Internet-based demographic. You only have to look at the politics of record label marketing to see how far trance jocks push these polls, where as other DJs seriously don't give a .

House is more popular than trance. There's no way you can deny that unless you spend more time on the Internet than real life.

I don't think the bashing is quite as serious as it seems. These things sound much more hostile when they are put into text. People hate on each other in a jokingly manner I think, well, most people anyway. But they do it because they have to justify why people should listen to their music instead of the thing they criticize. Everyone has to belittle others to make themselves stand out, to identify which niche that they fill. I sure wish there was a better way, but really if these people never bashed each other's styles, then it is very likely that nobody would ever bother considering switching from one style to another. Everybody would be stuck with whatever sound that is the most popular. Without these criticisms (most) people would never see the reason to try a different kind of music, because DJ's have to tell them in most cases, alot of people dont bother thinking for themselves and in order to be a succesful DJ you must have ALOT of people listening.

I tend to operate uner a broad definition of trance too panorik, but people disagree with me when I identify something as trance if it is a tune that is not full of cliche trance sounds. It seems every time a new and interesting variation of trance comes around, it is identified by a different name, so trance is kinda pigeonholed as crappy samey music because nobody is willing to admit that their variations on it are trance, instead they insist that it is "progressive house" or "electro" or wahtever more marketable term they prefer, despite it being closer to trance than it is to house or real electro.(please dont misunderstand this, I'm not saying that all prog is really trance, but alot of it is just trance with different source sounds, or the same sounds slowed down by like 5 bpm, which are very slight variations that IMHO would be trance but are called by other names for marketing purposes) I just feel that the overwhelming majority of people use trance in this very narrow definition compared to the way most people use house as a very general term covering a much broader selection of music.

back to the neo trance thing, im sure to most people it wont be a new category at all, but like this one list we have, it wont sound like anything different. Still I can imagine a situation where this word becomes popular despite being highly unnecesary, kinda like the words "blog" or "podcast" becomming common language despite them not being remotely new concepts.

that's quite true. i guess it's consequences of the bad name trance got back then, nobody seemed to dare to call what they do "trance". i also guess it was just a matter of time until someone would do that (sven vath), and it's just a matter of time until old trance gets a revival, like "electro" and acid the last 2 years. i'm hoping this neotrance will be it, since it's about ing time.

yeah, im waiting for people to start claiming they are trance again, it will be fun counting how many people flip flop between marketable terms.

I understand and agree for the most part

but does todays "progressive house (long, hypnotic, repetive)" well progressive house since 99 = trance? more then trance = trance?

Id say so but its still different :p

progressive house isn't about the original idea of trance. it's about making the most detailed and "advanced" production possible, and then pretending it sounds good.

Never said it was.

I don't think progressive house is more detailed or advanced at all. Its just a "trick" with changing the bassline, something that doesn't exist much in trance.
renttresnor
Uh, the trick that makes Progressive Trance progressive is a note changing bassline and a repeating lead, which it didn't have before, and has had in abundance since 1998.

I've got a tip for you wise fellows. Go take a musicology class...music theory...then come back and define trance. Because you're not going to do it through ignorance of music by using interpretive adjectives that are completely unrelated to music.

I wasnt aware musicology was able to define a subjective term, such as trance.;)
