Why do the words "American" or "Unites States" bother Canadians? (pg. 2)

looking deeper at it, I am somewhat serious. My distaste for the US (relax a bit I am American as well as Canadian) comes largely for the leaders a vast percentage of the population elect. The general American mentality of superiority and being invincible is scary. The fact that the leaders preffer to hang out at home rather than work during national disasters is another reason I continually scratch my head wondering who the hell is dumb enough to vote these idiots in to power in the first place. The support they show for the poor and disadvantaged is minimal and really only shows up when there is a public outcry against the current state of things.
Redirecting billions of levee funding away from New Orleans to support a war that wasn't justified... if you want to pick wars why not take out the problems in the sudan/darfur region instead... millions more are being slaughtered there and it would be a much easier war and make everyone feel good about helping humanity.
Going back to the New Orleans issue, living down here and seeing first hand the neighbourhoods that get back to normal within weeks and then seeing the black areas of town STILL without power forces you to think a bit about bigger issues.
For the record there are a lot things I do like better about the US but this thread isn't asking for those kinds of comments.
I personally do feel that the care I get in the US medical community is of better quality as long as you have good insurance. |

funny how canadians' superiority complex is born of inferiority. We pride ourselves on being less ignorant than americans and actually come off being MORE ignorant in the process.
Americans are our best friends and neighbours. Yes we have some fundamental differences and will disagree from time to time. But no one on earth is closer to being a canadian than an american. Our lifestyles, most of our ways of thinking and even our entertainment is pretty much the exact same. |

However true this is, i find it interesting that canadians will voice loudly about american politics and have strong opinions, yet will do NOTHING when their own government is screwing them over. In fact most of the time, canadians dont even know whats going on in their own country, yet are busy mouthing off george bush or tony blair. |

You should know that man. 537 people. House of Reps + Senate elect the pres..not us. our votes don't count. and the majority in congress is republican I believe so there you go. Democracy?...... |

| I'm sorry to hear the way you were treated at the clinic. I wouldn't have said that. But in my experiences with American's they tend to be pushy, rude, egotistical...and so on. I am in NO way saying that ALL american's are like that. I not only have relatives who are American, but I have met a lot of friendly American's. I guess it's just b/c many of the American's I've come in contact with seem to be like the stereotypical American jerk. But that's the way it goes with any stereotype. |

Then I'm sure you don't miss the news stories of how controverisal the last two presidential elections have been.
Would it not be more fair to ask the Americans you meet who they voted for, rather than assuming they're one for whom you harbor distaste, based on the assocaited allegation? |
