Why do the words "American" or "Unites States" bother Canadians? (pg. 4)

I personally respect the american way of dealing with things. They will let you know exactly how they feel. No "all is happy" faces followed by twofaced backstabbing as we like to do. |
I totally agree with u. With that way, you can make some enemies but atleast ur true. no nonsense, no bull |

I know but that system is so sketch. look at what happened in 2000 when Gore had more vote from the people and Bush won. |
I agree. It had a good purpose when it was created but it does not represent a truely democratic voting system. It was put in as a check of power for states with less population. Personally I would like to see reform on the electoral college that says something along the lines of (the total democratic votes of the entire country + the votes of the electoral college)divided by 2 equals the outcome of the president. again not perfect but one hell of a better system than what we have now. |

Then I'm sure you don't miss the news stories of how controverisal the last two presidential elections have been.
Would it not be more fair to ask the Americans you meet who they voted for, rather than assuming they're one for whom you harbor distaste, based on the assocaited allegation? |
Good point made here. A lot of the recent American's I have come into contact with are not happy with Bush as president at all. Now I don't want to turn this into a big political fiasco (Jay...haha), but I personally am not the biggest fan of certain things he does either. And it's interesting to see that he still won the election...with the number of people I have met that don't support him. |

well then they should keep those comments to themselves and their friends. having some close friends isn't an automatic pass to crack jokes and act all high and mighty (even if it is for jokes) around strangers |

honestly about the only thing that pisses me off about americans is their use of money out of the country. I cant stand to see americans expecting to be able to use their money in a foreign country at any shop and then getting mad when that shop wont accept US cash, or wont give change in US cash.
Lesson to Americans: When in a foreign country, you use foreign money.
Other than that there are dumbasses and smart ones just like there are dumbass and smart canadians.
PS when in a foreign country, YOU are the foreigner, not the locals. LOL |

| I don't know if it's fair to say we don't like the US. We do ride the US and "Americans"(which is the worst misnomer ever as everyone from the western hemisphere is American) kind of hard but that's likely due to a number of factors. Most significantly is the truth that everything the US does effects Canada. A population of 30 million next to one of 300 million with an interdependent economy means that whatever you do we are effected by, often more then the US itself. Additionally, we are often seen as Americans by non-North Americans.... we get painted with the same brush as you. What the US and their citizens do reflects on us when we're abroad. We reap the benefits when everyone loves the US and we pay the price when they don't. There are a number of other reasons as well but more then anything it boils down to this...... we are heavily invested in your welfare, therefore, we want to push you to be the best you can be and if that requires our constant criticism then that's what we will do.... think of us as the geopolitics version of Simon Cowell... yeah, we're hard on you and we can be quite curt but we're only doing so because we want you to try harder and do your best because at the end of the day we're really riding on your coat-tails. |

ok maybe the Simon Cowell bit is little out of place since he really doesn't care if they are good or not he just tears them a new one if they suck without hoping that they improve.... other than that I think there is some significant truth to the other comments, at least among socially economic consious Canadians. |

yea but canadians don't get painted with the same brush by non-north americans.
its pretty common knowledge that majority of the time; canadians were always treated much better than americans abroad |

True but until they know you're Canadian they assume you're American and you are treated accordingly. |
