I wanted to post this in here because I think I'm being a bit unfair to Josh & Dave in this thread with regard to my opinion of them as producers over the span of their career:

I have really been a fan of G&D's for a long time. Their remix of "Fallen" is one of my all time favorite tracks, and along with "Arcadia," Big Top - "Sub," Andain - Beautiful Things (G&D Mix as well as the Josh Gabriel Mix), "Dub Horizon," and "Portabello" I think they've produced some ace tracks.
I've dug seeing them live, although I'll admit to a growing boredom with their live sets, but I just can't get behind this album. There are too many things about it that just irritate me in each track, and I just genuinely don't feel that this is either their best work or even close to a display of what their capable of. |

Gabriel & Dresden.
The only thing I've ever liked from these guys is that awesome Andain-track which wasn't produced together.
Never had any expectations on this album, and I didn't really have a good oppinion about it either.
It sounds very bad from time to time, There's not a single track that I like fully and there's way to many vocal-tracks which annoys me these days. Cut the vocals :wtf:
Sydney may have been the only track that sounded quite ok, and it wasn't even good.
Sorry guys.

| Not Enough is by far the best part of the album. The whole album is decent, but should've been much better. Molly Bancroft should just not bein the music business period. |

A lot of the music I actually really liked after listening to the album. There are just WAY too many sub-par vocals on the album that bring it all down lower than it woulda been without them.
Sydney's a bangin' track though, even if it does sample "Around You" (which won't be released anyway). |

G&D review
Let's see. As I listen to the album I was expecting something surprisingly bad from all the negativity in the reviews. But I was pretty shocked because I had heard so many of the songs from hearing G&D Live so that it really wasn't that surprising.
1. Let Go - heard this played by them live. Loved it then. Loved it on the album. They use the musicality of the vocals to hit all the right core shifts to make you connect with the song. Love it. Thought the TTD echo in the intro was kind of weird. Does that make the CD blend if you have the whole thing on repeat? I'll have to check.
2. Eleven - A lot of people I know like Eleven. And I didn't even know what it was. Then I heard it, this is probably the track I've heard G&D play live the most so it was very familiar I just didn't know the name before. I think it's fairly well put together. But I don't like the whole messy sound. Where you twist some knob in production and you start getting all sorts of distortion and it's kind of like an intentional error. It's just not my bag. But I didn't like Big Top - Sub either. So for this track I recognize how it was crafted, just it's not my style.
3. Enemy - In general I just don't like male vocals as much. This kind of blends in some rock elements. Given that I don't need the album to be more accessible, this doesn't necessarily add much for me. Again not bad, just not my bag. Although I hope non-trance heads like this song, if so then I'll be glad it's on the album.
4. Dust in the Wind - Heard this one live too. It's long, and has the feeling that it's supposed to build a ton. And it builds some, but for its length it's not the crafted masterpiece that Dub Horizon was for me. I like it, I'd spin it if I needed a song that sounds like it's big but really encourages people to rest their feat a bit.
5. Mass Repeat - I agree with the beatport comment. Sounds not like the G&D masters at work but like somebody used a bunch of loops and left the more creative side of their brain off. It's not bad enough that I'd condemn them as being horrible musicians, it just doesn't add too much to the album. But when I listen to this track I think to myself. If they had 70 minutes of tracks on their album and it was about ready to ship. They went into the studio and 4 hours later they had this track finished and they said "What the heck lets throw this on the album too" I say why not. It's not like it being on the album makes me dislike it. It doesn't add much for me, much like a single leaf of miner's lettuce that you get on a fancy dish in between good meals at a fine restaurant. You're not really bothered that it's not as good as your filet mignon.
6. Closer - I like this track. I can't really say why. It has the right amount of bounce to it. It doesn't scream its way into the foreground. It happily plays along in the background but makes me bounce even though I'm not actively listening to it.
7. Not Enough - Male vocals again. This reminds me of Tiesto - UR when that showed up on his album. Pretty much similar comments from #3 minus the rocking aspect.
8. Amsterdam Interlude - I like this little bit of music which changes the mood a bit for the next track.
9. New Path - Big bass line, I think they could have worked it in a bit to connect it with you more so that when the core shifts happen you really feel it. Or maybe my sound system just doesn't really give me the full impact. I suspect the former. I like it more after the breakdown. I feel like if they had this song reach the momentum it has after the breakdown earlier and add a touch of the same magic that made Dub Horizon good to me this could have been a great track.
10. Sydney - From the very first moment this song peeks onto the scene, I knew I was interested. The sound is just addicting. The beat comes in, and the song establishes itself with a bit faster and bolder beat than I was expecting. A sudden shift to a more electro sound leaves me hoping for the whole thing to get tied together in a way that's brilliant and not just fall apart. I hear Around You start playing and now I'm really confused just what am I listening to? It's like Around You's dark and sinister cousin.
11. Dangerous Power - I've heard this live plenty of times too. I like it fine. Doesn't completely grab me. But not bad.
12. Tracking Treasure Down - I liked it the first time I heard it. It's been played by a lot of people since then, and I still like it for the same reasons I liked it when I first heard it. But apparently if you loop the entire CD TTD doesn't mix into Let Go.
Overall I like the album, it doesn't contain any As The Rush Comes. But in my opinion when you have a huge track that is being dropped like a freakin' bomb around the world, it deserves remixes and a vinyl release as a single and not a debut appearance on the artist album. So I think this is entirely appropriate. My favorite track by far is Let Go. Next up for me is Tracking Treasure Down.
Where TTD is kind of like Shivers on Armin's album and Let Go would be more like Zocalo. They are both good but Zocalo was much nicer to hear on Armin's album because I hadn't heard it before a ton like I had Shivers. Same thing here. I had only heard Let Go once live and then here on the album it's still a great track. TTD is a great track but it's not as new and exciting on the album.
I've enjoyed Armin's and Markus' latest artist albums. I'm adding G&D's album to that list because in my opinion it's on par. |
