well how I see it:

person goes into a club, hypothetical result: loss of hearing, purely his own loss, noone else affected

person goes into a club and smokes, hypothetical result: eventual risk of lung cancer, as well as effects on people around him

smoking is a personal choice, yes, true, but not everyone in a club would smoke right? so why should the rest be negatively affected by someone elses personal choice?

So, some people in the club may go deaf but others wont? But EVERYONE will die of lung cancer?

I didnt know that sound waves were so selective.

i think its based on the fact that you like music but dislike smoke. Therefore you are tolerant of one and not the other. So somehow you think that your intolerence should be a law. What im saying is what if someday someone is intolerent of something you like such as music?

Not everyone likes loud music at a club.

Yes, we need to be aware that just bc we're happy w/ the result of a new law (ie. banning smoking), that doesnt make the law appropiate or justified.

One needs to realize that they are in favour of the law simply bc it serves their self-interests, not bc the law is in and of itself particularly justified or fair!

That seems to be the case w/ the smoking one. One loves it bc all of a sudden they wonderfully dont have to deal w/ smoke in clubs, but just because you love it doesnt' make it right.

We need to remark and be aware of that difference!

Jamie, I'm a social smoker, and I have a Mum who is a heavy smoker, yet I'm very negative about smoking in public places, like clubs, bars, lounges, unless it is in a specifically designated area, where there are only those who smoke or wish to be around those who smoke

Jay, I'm yet to encounter someone who goes clubbing on regular basis and complains about the noise of the music in there

I'm going to move into one of those condo's by the Gardner and get the city to close it off after 10pm because the noise is going to bother me.

Pretty soon the city will setup a curfew for the whole city because someone will be bothered by someone else leaving their house too late.

Yes, but his point is one has no more right to bitch (and feel justified) about the smoke than one does about the noise of the music in there if they voluntarily chose to go there.

If the owners want to allow either in their club, its their call.

I guess we all can complain, but it doesnt mean the situation is wrong and needs to be fixed, unless the owner decides he wants to for watever reason

People smoke everywhere in Europe too. And it hasn't bothered me enough to complain or be upset about it.
