Used to work in a reptile store, i'll tell you the basics because i need to sleep soon.
-Look at getting either Red eared slider of Yellow painter turtles. Google these names for more indepth care sheets.
-Get to around 9inches shell diameter.
-Must have access to dry land where they can bask under a heat spot. Ideally 1/3 or 1/4 of the tank land. 3/4's water.
-Water must be atleast 18 inches deep for adults.
-Turtles ARE EXTREMELY MESSY! The more you spent on good quality cannister filters, the less time you spend cleaning the tank!
-One Adult turlte will need a minimum of a 4'x 2' x 2' tank. But buy a tank as large as you can afford.
-If buying a baby turtle, start him off in a smaller size tank so its less stressful on the guy and easier for him to find food.
-U.V. Flourescent bulbs are almost as essential as water for turtles. UV allows the turtle to absorb calcium into the body, strengthening the shell and bones. Without this most will die a slow death. UV bulbs need to be replaced every 9 months as the wavelength of the light being emitted shifts.
-Turtles are mainly carniverous. Feed on chicken, fish (live or dead) and processed foods. Some may take greens.

I believe if it is:
a) Captive bred
b) Not a threat if released into the wild
then your fine...besides, the common pet turtles (RES and YPT) are from the US anyway. |
