Well, assuming that you will be carrying it around with you a lot (to school, coffee shops etc.) like you stated, I'd look into something that is light. Since you don't plan on watching movies on it, I don't really see the reason for too large of a screen.
I'd look at something like this or this
I bought a Toshiba laptop over a year and a half ago and have been very happy with it. |
hmmm...i'm trying to stay around $1000. is that like out of the question if i want something good and dependable?
but then again, if he's gonna be financing it, and i'm gonna be making the payments, i guess it shouldn't matter. |

You can still get a decent/dependable laptop within your budget. It's just that based on your needs (portability), I suggest looking into something smaller and lighter. Of course, smaller and lighter will be a bit more expensive.
For example, when I bought my laptop, I needed a desktop replacement, so I went with a 15.4" wide screen. I almost bought a 17" screen one, and am really happy I didn't. While I still sometimes carry it with me, the bag can get heavy. If you're going to be out all day and using it all the time, you'll probably want to carry the power cable with you, maybe a lock, add book(s) and misc. items to all that and the weight can add up.
It's just something to consider. |

| yeah... dell is cheaper amongst the laptop lineups... i've been using 1 for the past 1 year and i must say their after-sale service is good (and i assume it's even better in your country). i used it for my work, music, game and movies... works perfectly fine :) |
