Ok so I was planning on just buying a used laptop from craigslist or something, but then yesterday I was thinking about how my dad recently went to BestBuy and financed a sick flat screen tv with surround sound and all that stuff. So I thought, “oh what the hell, the worst that can happen is he’ll say ‘no’”. So I call up my dad and give him this sob story about how I really need a computer for school and I really want a laptop so I can use it at the book store or the coffee shops and I can bring it to school, etc… and wouldn’t u know, he didn’t even hesitate. He told me to start looking for some online and he’s gonna see what he can do. I told him I would pay the monthly payments if he just went and did the financing for me since he has a credit card with them
Soooo…..what’s a good laptop? I really like those gateway ones, but those are kinda pricey right? I don’t need a huge fancy one to watch movies on or whatever. Just want to download tunes, surf the web and have a few programs on there for school like adobe photoshop. And that’s about it.
What are some mandatory specs I should look for? I want a big harddrive and lots of memory so I can multitask and I also want something that I can constantly upgrade.

use ebay instead of craiglist. unless you want to be scammed out of your money.
the price of new laptops have been falling lately making used not such a great deal. considering without a warranty if anything major goes wrong the laptop is worthless. |

Gateway is on it's way out. They've been closing stores all over the place, and now it's a bitch to get any type of good service at all. It's a real shame because they make GREAT products.
I have a toshiba sattelite laptop. It's got a really long warrenty that covers almost everything. So, I recommend toshiba :) |

^-- 40gig hard drive is the minimum, 80gig average, the processor on any new laptop is good enough unless your playing games. for writing papers, surfing the net and listing to music you don't need much, 15" monitor is a good size anything larger than that makes its hard to carry around, make sure you get a good battery. 512mb ram is average.
weight, quality of build, and waranty is what makes them expensive.

Well, assuming that you will be carrying it around with you a lot (to school, coffee shops etc.) like you stated, I'd look into something that is light. Since you don't plan on watching movies on it, I don't really see the reason for too large of a screen.
