Most foriegners going through immegration to get citizenship have to work and actually know more about Canada than most of us who were 'born with our god given rights'. I think many of them have more of a right to be Canadian than we do. Who are you to decide how much they deserve to be Canadian?

Hard to get citizenship? Ummm... The citizenship test is a joke.
But you are right. There are Canadians who probably couldn't pass the citizenship test. That's just sad.

Then there was that case of Romanian stripper... Probably an isolated case, but living in Toronto, I've met 'Canadian' immigrants who does nothing for Canada at all. So many scammers who want to have Canadian citizenship to get the benefits. I can't blame them for trying, but I can get annoyed at them actually getting citizenship without deserving it.

I believe it

I doubt that the majority there just happened to be vacationing at the time. I dont think even mexico has that many canadian tourists at any exact time in the year!

look i don't know if you have any lebanese friends, i do. These people always vacation at the same place, their homeland.

If they aren't in Lebanon on a given summer, it'll be their wives, sister/brother, mother and father or their cousin.

a co-worker had both his mother and father plus his sister in law vacationning, my friend has his sister there and a girl who posts on TA occasionly was stuck there, coworkers of my brother in law were there and the list goes on and on.

And this is specially true during summer.

On the other hand, a friend of mine hosted a family of four who lived in Canada for 15 years, moved back to lebanon in the mid 90s. Now they're back here with nothing, the daughter, who voiced her dislike of Canada , went to Saudi to join her fiance(good riddance).

On august 1st, the immigration ministry sent out a press release summarizing that 11124 landed at PEI, 2600 bound to other provinces.

All in all, 224 families, totaling 650 persons recieved an emergency releif cheque to help them get back on their feet (a month worth of welfare?).

Here's the press release in French: http://communiques.gouv.qc.ca/gouvq...6/01/c2785.html

I am sure no one cared checking it out at that newspaper because no one reads french, very usual in this two solitudes system we have in Canada.

the citizenship test is just a token, its not the ultimate step, if ever hardly.

There is numerous steps to get your citizenship which are far more critical to your acceptance.

It took our family 8 years to be granted citizenship, and I spare you the trouble we went into including deportation notices.

Agreed.
Same deal here. It took my mother years to get it and a lot of effort. And this is an American with a PhD from MIT, a Canadian Husband and guarenteed job offers from the federal gov't for every year she was here. It still took over 5 years. I can only imagine the effort someone from that area of the world would have to go through.
Most of us who have never had to try to get it from a country such as Canada don't have any idea what it actually takes a person to go through (the stress, $, time, life changes etc...).

I'm not saying it's impossibly hard, Canada does have a postitive imigration need to keep our population steady, but those that get it do have to work for it.

BTW: what benifits are we really talking about when we're saying they only get Canadian citizenship for the benifits? Relocating to a country that is more developed than the one you came from will obviously leave you feeling excited but at the same not everyone who come over is qualified for high end jobs to right away more into $$$$ making industries and live our picture of the ideal Canadian. They came here to make a better life for themselves and thier families much like our ancestors (unless you are native american). Just because we are a few generations removed from it shouldn't make this land of oportunity any more our private treasure than if we were fresh off the boat. Why are we so entitled to the benifits of being Canadian than anyone else? How much did you pay in taxes while attending elementary school? We have been reaping the benifits of being Canadian our whole lives, let them have this one.

And again, $85 million. A country the size of Canada can afford that without blinking. The fact it went to Humanitarian causes is great. The fact it went to help Canadians in need is even better.

I'm not trying to be a dick about this but there really is another GOOD side to what the Canadian gov't did. I'm just trying to make the case that we shouldn't jump so quickly to call it a bad idea if it helps others and didn't really hurt us.

I don't think anybody here is questioning the government's actions; they did what they had to do, even when they weren't required to.

The problem is a large portion of the people they evacuated.
Yes, there are a lot we'd consider, "legitamate", however footing a bill for people who don't contribute back into the system or social fabric is we're I'd draw the line.
There has to be some theshold built in to say, hey, if you're taking more out than you're putting back into Canada, you're going to have to pony up to help out with the difference.
Why should I have to do it for them when it's obvious they have absolutely no interest in being here?? :whip:

Canada spends millions every year all over the world for humanitarian aid in war torn, disease infested or malnurished countries, these people recieving aid have absolutely no link to Canada.

This outcry is incredible since its one of the rare times that humanitarian aid actually help Canadian citizens?

Is that a two standard system? or is it because the majority of the Lebanese community is francophone and lives in Quebec? I wonder if the same outcry would've been if say the indian community in Toronto had to go thru the same ordeal.

Once again, that article is based on zero facts and the second sentence sums it up:

quote:
The government won't officially divulge what the running total is, nor will it reveal how many people returned to Lebanon after the fighting stopped in mid-August.

So the journalist not knowing anything, goes on rambling about rumours and estimations.

i really don't feel like getting into the whole dual citizenship debate here, the rights and expectations, and all the other ...

what perplexes my mind is HOW IN THE WORLD DID THE COST OF FLYING OUT ONE PERSON OUT OF THERE END UP BEING $7,000?!!!!

Man, someone in the gov't got away with a fat cheque on that one...

, you could've paid me $2 mil and I would've found a way to get all those people out of there in the same manner... (didn't know that plane rides cost THAT much).

urgency and rarity could explain a chunk of that 7000$

but that doesn't explain all!

everything the govt gets involved into is expensive and over evalued.

yesterday i was at a presentation for the upcoming website at our govt agency............. 7,000,000 $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for a very regular CMS type site without transaction processing!!!!!!

Wtf i was outraged and thats only phase 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! man i felt raped.

im not talking about those who got welfare (thats a whole other can or worms)

But i dont doubt for a bit that 7000 of 14000 have already returned. Its a no brainer. And i happen to have a few lebanese friends as a matter of fact. And yes someone from their family goes to visit almost every year. However, most of their family who lives there has a Canadian passport which they use only when they are travelling (less hassles with visas etc).

The problem is not just with lebonese. When i was in macedonia i was in a carload with macedonians and we were going to greece. All of them were macedonian and living in macedonia. 2 barely spoke english. We got to the greek border and suddenly the whole car including me had canadian passports. (that way they didnt need a greek visa). I was shocked. I asked everyone how they had canadian passports and they said that relatives in canada had sponsored them.

I also noted how they were all canadian passports and not passports of other countries.

i was seriously pissed off even though at the time i was just happy to get over the border without problems. And the ironic part about the whole thing? As a canadian citizen I NEEDED A VISA TO GO TO MACEDONIA.

We really are a bunch of pussies in this country. Its time we crack down on citizenship once and for all.

jayx, that 7000 is way too exagerated, not backed in any way.

my welfare number meant that 650 have nothing here and needed immediate help, if it makes you happy, those 650 are almost certainly back in Lebanon.

The rest did not need help of that nature meaning for the most part they were returning home, here in Canada.

ChrisD
$85 million, who cares! The liberals misplaced, misspent, or simply stole more money than that over their last tenure in office. $85 million to get our citizens out of harms way no problem. They want to go back on their own accord, no problem.

Its the issues surrounding how one gets to become a CDN citizen that has me raising a few questions, some of which a few TA's have touched on.

or they had relatives and/or money to support them temporarily.

Dont tell me that most didnt have relatives here. And dont tell me that most lebanese are too poor to support themselves here for a few months because its certainly not the case.
