indeed.
those who live there and just hold canadian citizenship shouldn't benefit (for free), but I doubt that was the case for the majority, ( Ihad plenty of Leb friends too)
btw, all the civilized countries did the same to their citizens in Lebanon during the war |

$85 million, who cares! The liberals misplaced, misspent, or simply stole more money than that over their last tenure in office. $85 million to get our citizens out of harms way no problem. They want to go back on their own accord, no problem.
Its the issues surrounding how one gets to become a CDN citizen that has me raising a few questions, some of which a few TA's have touched on. |
i care...
the liberals stole our money outright. But id be interested in seeing the breakdown of costs for $8000 per person to evacuate people when it usually costs less than 75 CDN one way from beirut to cyprus. Even taking into account inflated govt bureaucracy something is terribly wrong here.
Harper should be coming up with some good answers about this. |

Oh yes... with the same wads of counterfeit US dollars they used to pay back victims of lost homes (as appeared in the famous newspaper photo). |

or they had relatives and/or money to support them temporarily.
Dont tell me that most didnt have relatives here. And dont tell me that most lebanese are too poor to support themselves here for a few months because its certainly not the case. |
sure, yes, but I'm willing to bet on this, that the number who returned are not even remotely close to 7k. |

First let me just say that I am a proud Lebanese Canadian and I have lived here for 16 years. I am disappointed at some of the comments in this forum from some of my fellow Canadians. $80M dollars of aid to Lebanese Canadians whether they live in the country or not works out to $2.50cents per Canadian. So I have to sit and listen to people bitch and complain about $2.50 (2 in mcdonald burgers) freaking cents when they have made the life of thousands of Lebanese Canadians who were faced with a war they had no control over a little bit less stressful. I have family who came here who had lost their homes, their entire ing home after developing quite a good life in Lebanon and you guys are complaining about $2.5, what are you worried a pot hole in the city of Toronto is going to be there for another year. Or would you rather that money be spent by corrupt policians through scandals. Why cant you just be proud that you live in a country that provides a luxury to its citizen of knowing that no matter what they will be there for you and help out.
I pay a lot of taxes in Canada, I barely use the health care system, and i cant remember the last time thinking oh wow my government is wisely spending their tax dollars, so i would like to think that if i were to travel to lebanon in the future and a war in which there was no warning of its initiation and out of my control breaks out, that Canada and its citizens would happily be willing to fly me back without me having to worry about placing a price on my life and without having to think twice that fellow Canadian would rather see me stuck in terrifying situation rather then consider paying $2.50. Because if i dont at least get the respect for life and the quality of life from my tax dollars then its just a waste of money.
I am not saying that people did not abuse this or there are no free loaders, but the majority of the people went through a horrifying experience, so why dont you consider this as a good deed instead of bitching about it. |

You're not the problem, it's the ones that live here out of convenience that's the problem, so you've missed the point.
There is no issue with people such as yourself who actually contribute
to the country they live in, that's the way it should be and I congratulate you for that. :)
However, the ones that come for a free pass, just to get somewhere else, is selfish and downright rude.
Explain why I should have to pay for that??
Regardless if it was $2.50 or $8000, the money is not the point at all.
Canada is a very philanthropic country yes, but we CHOOSE to be that way, as an example to others.
When we are FORCED to pay for something though, we have every right to question, especially with our tax dollars.
I'm proud that our government has the gumption to pull out our Canadian citizens from a dire situation when the host country was uncapabale of, however the audacity of those few, to come back with complaints should get a kuff to the side of the head. |
